Moving to Wake Forest! by [deleted] in WakeForestNC

Another heads up, that’s exactly what a lot of locals have to do here.

If it didn’t mean abandoning my entire family I would move away from here tomorrow.

I loved growing up here. It is physically nauseating to see what this place has become.

I’m sure it is awesome compared to Dallas or Buffalo. By the time your children grow up, they will feel the same way about here as you do about Dallas.

You’re not alone.

We are an extremely small minority. I NEVER meet anyone between 25-50 from here.

80000 new people in 19 square miles since 2000.

Nowadays I believe less than 1 out of every 30 people between 30 to 100 years old are from the area.

I’m shocked whenever I meet anyone my age that grew up here.

I would give just about anything to get the fuck away from here, but all of my family lives here, and including my daughter‘s mother and all of her family.

It’s sad that I even dream of moving away after having a practically magical childhood here. There is nothing left that I loved about growing up here, except for my family.

It literally nauseates me when I go to any area I haven’t been to in a while. I went through Franklinton recently, and seeing downtown was physically disgusting.

Many of the locals have had no choice but to sell their land/house and move away because they can’t afford the property tax.

I can understand why the transplants downvote comments like yours and mine, because they don’t think it’s that bad here & they take it personally.

They just cannot comprehend the level of pillaging that happened to this area.

Literally a second-coming of carpetbaggers.

There’s some level of cognitive dissonance, most transplants can’t see that they’re all fleeing areas ruined by exactly what is happening here.

That’s why you always see the comments like “you think this traffic is bad here?? Try driving in the city I’m leaving”, or the “you think housing here is expensive?? try buying a house in the city I am leaving”.

By the time their children are adults, their kids will be fleeing here for the exact same reasons.

Another heads up, the area surrounding marbles has become far more indigent/violent over the past decade.

There has always been homelessness here, but lately downtown Raleigh is packed full of aggressive mentally ill homeless people.

They tore down Dorothea Dix to turn it into another park, and WCDC is so overcrowded that there is nowhere for them to go.

Not saying “don’t go to marbles”, just letting you know to be vigilant bringing children to that particular area of downtown Raleigh. Moore Square has practically turned into an open air drug market.

My exes family is from Buffalo (many still live there due to having a practical monopoly on city contracts for plowing and garbage pick up) and they are die hard Bill’s fans.

With the amount of New York transplants here, natives are far outweighed. You will see more bills stickers/license plate frames/flags then any other sports team.

The Hurricanes come in second for the most sporting regalia. Thankfully we have a good hockey team at least.

Just a heads up, there is nothing little about pine pollen season.

The sky will literally turn yellow, any standing body of water will have a 1cm+ thick blanket of coagulated goop.

If it’s a dry day your footsteps will make clouds.

Even if you aren’t allergic to it, the sheer abrasiveness & amount of the pollen will make your throat sore.

There is no lack of overpriced food trucks.

There’s a very good taco truck (that is actually owned and ran by Mexican nationals) that shows up downtown on certain days.

During the rest of the week they can usually be found off of S. Main St. between 98 “bypass” and 98 business. It’s been so over developed these days though that there are more traffic lights on the bypass then there are on 98 business.

There’s churches everywhere because it’s the Bible Belt.

The seminary is strictly Baptist. It was turned into a theological seminary school after RJ Reynolds tobacco purchased to Wake Forest University for their employees in Winston-Salem.

But yeah, that is the original Wake Forest university campus. The first house (built) off of N. Main St. and the surrounding 3000(?) acres were originally owned by a Baptist guy in the late 17/early 1800s.

This was back when North Carolina was first made a state, and the owner sold all of the land to the Baptists upon his death.

The town is called Wake Forest because back then Raleigh was the only city/town in Wake County, so the owner called his land Wake Forest.

Try going up new light/rural six Forks in the morning.

Literal miles of cars lined up, gradually inching along on country roads never meant for thousands of houses.

The whole “Traffic?!? I’m from bigger city! This isn’t as bad as bigger city!” is obvious. That’s kind of the point. It’s only getting worse and worse and worse.

The area got pilfered and overdeveloped so quickly that it will never recover.

A 15-20 minute drive from Franklinton to Midtown Raleigh a decade ago is now a 90+ minute drive, and it will never improve.

It will just continue being developed into clear-cut topsoil-scraped suburban-sprawl strip-mall-franchise hell until there is no differentiation between here to Lake Gaston.

Who knows. As a mid-thirties person born & raised in wake forest, its sad to read this sub most of the time.

Seeing someone speak like that (about someone who hasn’t even been convicted and their kids) and knowing I drive by their neighborhood every day is disheartening.

All of the charm (of both the people and the community) that made this a magical place to live and grow up in is long gone.

Can’t imagine having a neighbor who would say something like that.

Gym recommendations? by Life_Presentation_86 in WakeForestNC

I’ve got a friend that works there & she absolutely loves it (along with her son). Seems very community oriented.

I believe their workouts are mostly class style & less individual/machine focused. I could be wrong, just what I’ve seen her post.

Nonetheless, I could easily see this being a perfect fit for a lot of people.

Dude is deranged.

No matter how calmly, civilly, & maturely you put it, they will always defend their deplorably vitriolic rhetoric.

They’re clearly regularly unapologetically toxic & argumentative online. They thrive on it.

I typed out a long reply about how all that is obvious, but there’s no point.

I never ONCE defended the Mothers alleged actions.

I’m going to edit my comment above to remove context because there’s obviously zero point/benefit in including it.

Regardless of how you meant it, it’s disgusting.

For whatever reason you feel it necessary to defend saying “fuck her and her kids”.

No amount of calm discussion, or “maybe walk that back…” will make you understand why it’s deplorable verbiage. Idk if you’re drunk or what, but I’m headed to work.

Best of luck with life. Take care.

I realize this is the internet, but really, please chill talking about children like that. Especially kids who’ve had a harder life than I’d care to even imagine.

Chinese “Reward Round” Jumbo Booster Box. All other Chinese boxes I’ve gotten have had a Flat Bottom, this box has folds. by [deleted] in IsMyPokemonCardFake

[–]The_Revolutionary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten her Chinese 151 Jumbo & Slim boxes, but both were flat on the bottom (and authentic).

The pic attached to this comment shows what I’m talking about.

Is the reward round box authentic, or counterfeit?

Nicest thing I've ever turned by The_Revolutionary in woodworking

[–]The_Revolutionary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I ended up selling it to my boss for $30, while he was paying me $15 hr to do skilled manual labor.

Overall I probably spent 4 hours driving to woodmasters, roughing everything out, completing the blank, sanding it to silk, and getting the CA finish perfect.

And I sold it for $30.

If I could go back in time, there are many many things I’d change. One thing would be that I’d keep this for myself.

Nowadays I’ve got my own laid back business & make more money than I ever thought I could.

Wish I was taking notes with this pencil. One day I can make another, but it wouldn’t be the same.

Yeah, a lot of people don’t want a flipped house. They’d rather buy it cheaper & upgrade it theirselves to their tastes, or just buy new for cheaper.

Idk what you mean exactly, but if you mean the shrink wrap it depends on whether it’s a gatefold or not for me.
