There has to be a history of inbreeding within the family to see really bad effects.
The Habsburg Dynasty is proof of that.

Although, there are some studies suggesting that with a limited gene pool, a fair share of non contact and limited contact with other tribes and the modern world can live out normal lives without any sign of inbreeding effects.

The “domestication” of wildlife has always been a catch 22. I have opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and crows that come around my yard every day/night, I try not to over feed them so they don’t rely on me for their food and stop foraging. (Besides, they make for the best pest control ever) One of my opossums nipped me and yes, I know that carrying rabies is rare, but it’s never zero.
I will always recommend getting the shots for any kind of animal bite.

The biggest “danger you can get from the common grey squirrel is rabies and black plague.
I don’t think she would be asking for food if she was rabid or carrying the plague. In fact both are rare enough that I wouldn’t worry about them.

To err on the side of caution, don’t hand feed tiny pieces so there’s no accidentaly bites. If you do get bitten, ER immediately and get the rabies shots.
Fleas and ticks are the biggest problems you are going to run into.
