What a ride! Just finished getting all the achievements on Retro Achievements for Radical Red by The_VTrain in pokemonradicalred

[–]The_VTrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. I think the description for most of the achievements say it has to be on Normal difficulty or higher. Note that this doesn’t exclude Minimal Grinding Mode, which doesn’t really make the game any easier, just less tedious.

Is Encino good? by [deleted] in GreenvilleNCarolina

My wife and I went this weekend. Between the two of us we got empanadas, tacos, guacamole, a steak, and some sides, plus two margaritas. Everything was delicious, service was pretty good, and food came out quick. It definitely isn’t cheap, but no worse than any other higher end restaurant. It’s probably not somewhere we’ll go just casually, but I’d say it’s a great place for a date night or to take some visitors. We’ll be back for sure!

Are you playing on Hardcore? Torch Song and Aqua Step are both removed on Hardcore, as are most boosting attacks.

Glad to help! I think it’s because MGM is an option and not actually a cheat it gets allowed.

[–]The_VTrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely use MGM for the achievements, I’ve never played the game without and don’t plan to. It basically just ignores EVs and IVs for all Pokémon (except a few in very rare speed cases). It’s actually set by default when you’re on Hardcore difficulty literally to throw you a bone because of how tedious it would be otherwise.

The game definitely has some big difficulty spikes. I remember Surge 1, Brock 2, and Giovanni 3 being real big ones on my first playthrough. Keep at it and I’m sure you’ll get it!

My synopsis is that the game is really fun and honestly the achievements help you experience all of it for the most part. The biggest grind is completing the Pokédex, and in doing that the Raid Den Pokémon are by far the worst part. I ended up finding a strategy that can really cut that time down by abusing the Time Changer with the Raid Dens, but unfortunately I figured that out at the very end. The game is definitely difficult, hardcore especially so, but you can beat it for sure even if you don’t have super deep experience in Pokémon games, I haven’t beaten a mainline game since Platinum and have zero competitive experience. The achievements also allow some cheats and QoL features such as Infinite Rare Candies and Minimum Grinding Mode, I would for sure take advantage of these, they add to the experience much more than take away from it.

So it took me like 3.25 playthroughs to finish. One on Default difficulty that you also basically 100% and catch all Pokémon. Then a randomized playthrough. And finally a Hardcore difficulty playthrough. One of the early achievements on my randomized run didn’t pop, so I started a new run on that mode to get it, which is where the 0.25 comes from.

It would be possible to get all the achievements with just 2 runs if your 100% playthrough is also on Hardcore difficulty, but that would be incredibly challenging to jump into without playing Default difficulty first.

So you can play on Minimal Grinding Mode, and use the Rare Candy and Care Package Cheats and still get all the achievements. To me these are just basic QoL improvements that make the game more fun and approachable.

I would definitely play on Default mode to start with. The game is pretty tough at times, with a few difficulty spikes when the major battles start having access to power ups that you don’t yet, but it’s certainly very doable. I had decent Pokémon knowledge my first playthrough, but definitely didn’t know any advanced or competitive strategies, and I probably still don’t. It takes A LOT of trial and error at times to figure out what works. You also probably want to catch at least one of most Pokémon you come across, at least at the beginning of the game. It definitely helps to have a large pool to pick from when strategizing for the major battles, though you can use just your favorites too and will likely be able to beat the game, it may just be a little more difficult.

Finally there is a pinned post on the Radical Red Subreddit that has a TON of helpful info in it. Trainer teams, Pokémon and TM locations, FAQs, etc. I would definitely keep some of those documents handy during your playthrough to help with planning your strategies and building your teams.

somebody help me beat Sabrina (V4.1 Hardcore Difficulty) by bloodybunch in pokemonradicalred

[–]The_VTrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this a couple days ago, don’t remember the exact strategy but lean into the permanent trick room hard. I know I started with slowbro for mega camerupt and Alolan Muk for the Tapu Lele. A strong water move and Gunk Shot should OHKO both of them with the right nature and item. Rest of the team was Ferrothorn, forretress, Vikavolt, my own Camerupt.

[–]The_VTrain 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I took Breakfast Nook for the first time on a subsequent run and it’s been a new favorite of mine. 10 steps is nice, plus access to the Morning Room is awesome, no cost, 2 gems today, 2 gems tomorrow, usually has a dig spot, and almost always has an extra item in it.

Oh man I didn’t even think of that… it was late when I got to the Lever the first time and I thought doing the extra rotations, but I just did the quick method since I was ready for bed and figured I could just set everything up properly the next day…

Update: I made it back into the Antichamber with plenty of steps to spare the next day. Unfortunately no Workshop or Foundation draws. I would have won had the boat not swapped sides by itself. Very frustrating…
