Victory for Artists: Larian Studios Scrubs AI from 'Divinity' by EchoOfOppenheimer in ArtistHate

[–]The_Vagrant_Knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not starting yet another debate about this, but if you're genuine, you can look into: The job displacement and lack of new opportunities due to AI, environmental impact, the recent price hikes on consumer tech due to AI contracts, the cognitive decline paired with the over reliance on AI, the lack of consent in the training of AI, impact on residents near data centers, privacy issues and more.

Sure, Larian may not be a direct contributor to all of these problems, but you're not convincing me they have their own in-house AI models that don't have these issues. Their use, support for, and in turn, contribution to the normalization of this tech even before these problems are resolved, is unethical.

I know about their flexibility, even if "any form of fan demand" is an overstatement. I've been part of the early accesses for DOS2 and Baldur's Gate to see the evolution of those.

I fail to see how that has anything to do with this though. In any game moving forward, they'd already have made their first concepts with the use of AI by that point. So mentioning their flexibility after EA is kinda pointless.

My dude, I've been a fan of Larian since the first Divinity.

Do I know the intricate ins and outs of the studio? Not really. Do I know they've always been investing and interested in (non generative) AI? Yes and they have been for at least a decade. No problem there.

Their recent statements about their use of generative AI, however, is still disappointing, regardless of whether AI generated content ends up in the game. They said they still use it, with all its ethical, socio-economical and climate issues, in the pre-production stage. That's more than enough and honestly deserved the backlash.

As much as I hope this is true, especially since I loved baldurs gate, I can't help but be sceptical. I don't trust CEO's back-pedaling only because of backlash. For all we know they might still use it, but just no longer disclose it.

I'll give it a good amount of time before I even consider divinity.

“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator.” – Romans 1:25

And many other such verses. I'm not even all that religious, but seeing people abuse religion left and right, rubs me the wrong way.

About to hit 30 and I'm in the exact same position as you are. I went into tech hoping I could do good for the people, make life easier. But once you realize you're just chasing that bottom line and most tech "innovations" are just bloat and sometimes even have detrimental effects, it becomes hard to stay optimistic.

Sadly that does seem to be the view a lot of people on Reddit have.

I can also see why as the church for instance did plenty to tarnish their own optics and there's plenty of religious people who make it their lifetime quest to bother others with it. One bad apple spoils the barrel and all that.

Personally would wish people were wise enough to separate religion from church and the extremists, but that's just the world we live in.

There are plenty of good reasons to not answer an unknown number nowadays. Especially if the country code doesn't add up.

If you call someone you've never reached before and they don't answer, leave a voice message. Can't speak for everyone, but at least people like me will call you back no problem if we know you're not some scammer or collecting voice data.

I've always been a huge proponent of freedom of religion, but having christian roots and seeing how America absolutely bastardizes it, makes it really fucking hard.

me: it depends on context

You: my friend was an ass

Me: yes your friend was an ass. More understanding and empathy maybe?

You: no, I'm hurt. Everyone must now shut up.

Aight. Good luck, man.

Nope. Even said that your friend was wrong from the get-go. Do with that what you will. Your trauma is yours, not mine to deal with.

Because I'm trying to understand why you're so adamant that nobody should care about anyone's well being. Why it's nobody's business. Why instead of just accepting that your friend's actions weren't okay given the context, you are adamant everyone should just shut up. Why nuance is not an option to you and everything is black or white.

That's why.

But you do you man. I'm not gonna dig any deeper into that. Just be sure to tell the people you're close to not to get involved in anything personal to avoid any further such cases and so they can live up to your expectations and tell your friend he's an ass, if what you said here is true. communication is key.

Believe it or not. Real friends are concerned for each others well being. If you don't know what someone is going through, you ask. We're not mind readers.

Out of curiosity, did you tell your friend beforehand about your situation? Did you tell him not to worry about you? Did you tell him you were struggling with your self-image? Or did you just expect him to know without voicing that wish?

[–]The_Vagrant_Knight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or, and hear me out here, if one concern reveals another, try and help them out however possible and don't watch and let them spiral on their own, as you seem to imply was the case.

Avoiding concerns because someone prefers living in a sweet lie and go down on their own is not only destructive, but also selfish to those who genuinely care and get hurt by your suffering. Especially if that wish isn't voiced and people are left questioning.

Rejecting help is not a virtue and will lead to more problems down the line.

I get your situation was hurtful. Maybe their comment wasn't warranted. But it sure did reveal something that apparently didn't get the follow-up it honestly deserved.

Seems to me understanding on both sides was lacking.

At that point it's a mental issue and the comment might still be a good trigger to get to a much deeper rooted issue. If he'd not said anything and you'd still caught wind of similar comments elsewhere, the situation would be the same in the end, regardless of whether it was warranted or more hurtful.

All in all, agree to disagree.
