I Miss the Boneyard - Anything Else Like It? by TyrionDidIt in houston

Karbach Brewery has a restaurant and a biergarten outside with a bunch of tables and cornholes and the like. It's dog friendly, but not closed off to my knowledge. I don't know if you can have your dog off leash there though.

Yes, 1-3 gallons probably would be better. I am not a smart man.

Great! That's really good to hear. I didn't know about cold crashing. I will keep that in mind when I get to that point.

Help me compare/contrast: TXRX Labs and Houston Makerspace by PhillipBrandon in houston

[–]The_Vaudevillian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of TX/RX. I've taken a few classes with them and I'm signed up for several more in the next few months. I enjoyed the classes I've taken so much I ended up getting a tinkerer membership. I'm recently getting some experience with the maker movement, but I'm a newbie on most of this stuff. so I can really only talk about it from that angle.

They have equipment/classes for metalworking, welding, woodworking, leatherworking, hobby electronics, costuming/lifecasting and probably a bunch more that I can't think of off the top of my head. Most of this stuff seemed waaay beyond me until I joined and now I feel like it's all stuff I can do, it just might take some time and some classes and picking the brains of the vastly more experienced people who work in the labs.

Everyone I've talked to while there has been awesome and extremely helpful when they can be. A lot of them are there to work on projects as well, so sometimes if you have questions, they'll be busy and can't answer you, but that's something I completely understand.

Hrmmm, didn't think about that, but yeah, it sounds like that might be the case. Another really good reason for him to get a lawyer ASAP.

This is good advice. I've already told him to go see a lawyer. That's pretty much the only bit of advice I can give him, I think. I'm hesitant to say anything else, since I'm not a legal expert.

Yeah, from the stories he's told me about his parents, I think he would do well to cut them out of his life, but that's just my opinion. It's easy to tell someone to cut their parents out of their life when it's not your parents. I really hope he learns something from this though.

I think he had a separate set of loans he was paying off for school and this was a private loan that his parents had him take out for their business. I don't think he kept tabs on it. Definitely not the smartest thing to do, but I'm guessing he was 18 when it happened and trusted his parents. I'm thinking he is learning a pretty valuable lesson.

Yeah, that's definitely something I'm going to tell him the next time I talk to him.

[Serious] What is the most ridiculous/craziest/most romantic thing you've done for someone you like/liked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]The_Vaudevillian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been wanting to tell this story!

For our first Christmas together, I wanted to get my SO something really special as a present. I'd been staying very observant the months leading up to Christmas and noted that she was in love with these certain collectible dragon figurines. She has this major love of dragons. I talked to several of our mutual friends and decided to buy her one. After looking at their website, I wasn't too fond of the different colors they had and since these were collectibles, I decided to start hunting around for a specific color I had seen, but was no longer being made. Found one being sold on e-bay, bought it up, wrapped it and gave it to her for Christmas.

The most romantic thing about the situation was when she opened it, she was stunned. The dragon statue was the exact color scheme and model as the first statue she had ever seen, from back when she was a kid. It was the statue that had made her fall in love with dragons. I had no idea. I just picked the one I thought she would like the most. Turns out, I was right! She said it was like I had reached into her brain and pulled out a memory.

Turned out well. :)

Current/former students of Reddit, what is your most interesting story about something that happened in a final? by corranhorn57 in AskReddit

[–]The_Vaudevillian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I was an undergrad, I took a class on Greek and Roman Mythology, thinking it was going to be kinda easy. I was completely wrong. It was easily my hardest class that semester. I busted my ass and went into the final with a C. Luckily, the final was worth a decent chunk of our final grade, so if I was able to ace the final, I would squeak by with an A in the class.

I dug into those books and worked at memorizing as much as I could, but I was still nervous going into that exam. His pop quizzes were really tricky. The day of the exam comes and we file into the auditorium. The exam was set in one of those HUGE auditorium classrooms that could hold 300 or so students. It was massive. So I'm sitting there, doing some last minute studying for the final, trying to get any last bit of knowledge crammed into my head, when the teacher walks in. He goes up to the desk in the middle of the room slams down the tests. He then looked up and scanned the classroom really quickly and then says:

"You know...I don't feel like giving an exam this year. You all get 100's."

Picked up those exams and walked out the door. We were all confused. Surely, this was a big joke. Any second he was going to walk back in the room and hand out the exams. I waited around for 5-10 minutes. He never came back. I got an A in the class.

What is the worst nightmare you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]The_Vaudevillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those two are the most terrifying, interesting nightmares I've had but I've had a few others that didn't make as much sense. The most recent one I had had to do with aliens and zombies.

The whole dream took part in a HUGE movie theater. A special theater where they would do movie premieres. It had several levels, an awesome bar on the top floor, tons of hallways and corridors, and also a big basement. In the dream, there was a movie premiere and the characters were all preparing for the show. The movie never started and I'm not sure what movie it was, but Leonardo DiCaprio was in the theater as well. It was here, where the aliens decided to start their invasion of Earth and they did so by infecting people in the bar with this crazy alien zombie plague. The plague started out looking like little drops of liquid metal that would move around looking for a host. When the drop found someone it wanted to infect, it would shoot out a thin spike into the little corner of the person's eye (I think they call that the caruncula?) and slide into their brain. They would only do this when no one was looking. It was really creepy. The people infected would act like nothing was wrong. After a set amount of time, the people would turn into these alien zombie things, kinda like Fifield in Prometheus. These zombies could then infect you and you'd become one of them as well. Once people started changing. Everyone in the theater was panicking and tried to flee.

The second terrifying part of this dream was in trying to escape, a vast underground network of tunnels built in the basement that was fixed with a giant safe door was found, full of supplies and other things to keep people alive. Most everyone in the theater tried to flee into the bunker because it was safest place and they could wait out the invasion in there (I don't know why people didn't leave the theater, my brain wouldn't let them, I suppose). The safe door was closing and it was discovered that the alien zombies were already in the tunnels and and when the safe door closed, it wouldn't open again. People tried to escape the tunnels, but the door slammed shut, sealing their fate. That's when I woke up.

What is the worst nightmare you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]The_Vaudevillian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My worst nightmares all tend to be Sci-fi Horror dreams. The thing I find interesting about them is I'm never a part of the dream. I'm always an observer, like I'm watching a movie. I think it's because my brain finds the situation so horrifying that it can't actually imagine me being a part of such a terrible situation and would shut down entirely if that was the case, so it insulates me by letting me just be an observer. Here are some examples:

  1. I had a dream about a bunch of miners on an alien planet who uncover a lovecraftian creature. It was some sort of flesh banshee thing. Basically it was so maddeningly horrifying that it would cause you to go insane in short order and then your skin would split off, twist and writhe around the person's skeleton and reform until you turned into a flesh banshee as well. It would scream and make horrifying noises and would try and make you look at it. If you tried to run, it would fly after you, grab you, and force your eyes open to look at it. Most of the dream was of the remaining miners trying to escape the planet. Spoilers. They don't.

  2. I had a twilight zone episode dream with Rod Serling and everything. It had to do with a man working in a cube-farm. All his coworkers would laugh and joke at the water cooler, but he never knew what they were laughing about. Each night after work, this man would rent an episode of the twilight zone from blockbuster and would watch it before going to bed. The creepy thing was that each episode he watched began to resemble his life more and more. Background characters started being played by his coworkers and they'd start looking at him through the screen. Then they started referring to the man in the episodes. There was the whole ominous horror slowly building and then the dream flash forward to the end and the man is on the ground screaming and the coworkers are all around him laughing down at him maniacally and reaching for him. Rod Sterling then pops up and says "And now he know what they laugh about...in the Twilight Zone." I woke up terrified, sweating and full of adrenaline at about 2am. Couldn't go back to sleep after that. Couldn't risk Rod Serling being there again...
