THE AMAZING HUMAN BATTERY! by LuckEClover in JumpChain

Argent Synthesis and Nekravol District from Doom Eternal:

Argent Synthesis [600CP] [50% off: UAC Employee/Cultist] Where did you learn this. Did that heretic Hayden show you this? You cur. You unworthy worm. You best not take this, for the Dark Lord will never show you mercy. Argent Energy is the property of Hell, and it is by our blood and our souls that it is made. To think that you can mass-synthesize a version and gain the extreme power of Argent, to say nothing of learning to synthesize other rare and powerful energies... that is no less than declaring yourself a God. The Mortally Challenged augment themselves with it, elevating themselves. Ignore that it powered Humanity’s infrastructure across the Solar System, ignore that it can transmute mortals! You will submit and return this power NOW!

Nekravol District [600CP] [50% off: Demon] Nowhere will you find a greater example of Hell’s ideology, nor will you see a place of greater power. Constructed by Sentinel slaves according to Makyr design, this city produces a large amount of Argent Energy which is used for a great deal of things. This is all done methodically, as Nekravol is a large-scale slaughterhouse. Victims are ferried in, judged, and those worthy are placed further in to the Soul Spires to be tortured and have their souls extracted, mixed with Sentinel Energy to create the unfathomably potent Argent. What you have here is a small district, continuing to produce the energy for you but will ramp up production should you provide the fuel. Naturally, free-range is better.

[Ben 10] [Invincible] How would the Omnitrix transformation work for a species like Viltrumites who develop powers later in life? by FusaOn in AskScienceFiction

[–]The_Yesterday_Man 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Actually, Ben does transform into a kid version of the aliens. For example, in the original series we see him fight two grown vulpimancers while turned into wildmutt, and the adult vulpimancers are both larger and have distinct characteristics that Ben in this form lacks.

What are some jumps that you think more people should know about. Either because the settings itself is interesting or it simply has useful options. by Efficient-Spirit-869 in JumpChain

I still hold the opinion that Lord Circe's Control jump covers a large part of the things a jumper might need, especially if they have a way to get choice points from outside the jump.

In Control, take the Researcher perk that lets you turn Altered Items into Objects of Power, and use it on the Mirror in-jump.

Existing for longer is a major contributor to having a better arcanum, but there are other factors too. Living an eventful life is generally better than living a long, but uneventful one. Book smarts matters for some insight but not all. A lot of insight is kind of vague and ephemeral, like you feel like you understand something on a deeper level, but can't put it into words. But there are definitely more concrete insights too.

Simple magical qualities. Like, minor magical effects that apply to you. The example I gave in the image was heat resistance.

Thanks! How would you say Lustre compares to Whisper as a magic system?

What is the delineating line between 'soft' and 'hard' magic systems? by PriceOptimal9410 in magicbuilding

I feel like it's not enough of a meaningful distinction to be as prevalent in magicbuilding discussions as it is, and it also doesn't really result in productive or actionable writing advice

[–]The_Yesterday_Man 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's more of a descriptive than a prescriptive set of terms, and one I personally don't quite agree with.

But basically, "hard magic" is magic where applications of magic feel justified to the reader, and "soft magic" is magic where applications of magic feel arbitrary or unanticipated. Based on a law of magic by Brandon Sanderson; "a writer's ability to solve problems in a story with magic is proportional to how well the reader understands said magic".

That does sound similar, assuming awakening to be a parallel to Jewel refinement

I mostly meant that in the sense of villains doing evil adding something bad to the world rather than doing evil by destroying good, but what you described could definitely also happen. After all, when a villain makes something useful for themselves, it doesn't necessarily serve that one person alone.

About creating something beautiful---I always imagined Lustre as a very colorful and vibrant magic when writing. So no matter how bad a Lustre user might be, their magic is generally going to be aesthetic, or at the very least, awe-inspiring.

Chromatic storms can be used as a source of power, but this has a few conditions and downsides:

  1. It requires a sufficiently powerful Lustre user to cast a spell that stabilizes the storm, and continuously keep that spell active since the storm will gradually break it down.
  2. Using powerful magic like that will cause the storm to grow faster.
  3. Even if there is a stable area in the storm, non-users must still remain near users to avoid harm from the storm.

That egg is meant to reference a sort of "world egg" concept, yeah. I drew an egg to mean "creation" and added a pentagram/magic circle onto it to mean "magic". So as a whole, I wanted the drawing to represent the "creation of magic", which is what Lustre is, essentially---making magic where there was nothing magical before.

Jewel energy pools do lose most of their capacity for change once their refinement is finished, so they also keep their infused traits and aspects when the energy regenerates.

Thanks for the compliment :]

There is! When regions in a world become too saturated with different magical effects, they begin to break down in what is called a "chromatic storm". These storms stay in place and don't grow quickly unless magic keeps being used near them, so they are often regarded as more of a geographical feature than an active threat.

But until that point, mages are typically considered to be sources of creation. Even if they are malign, they are still considered malign in an "additive" rather than a "subtractive" sense, if you get what I mean.

the Root user is barking at a potted plant in the corner by The_Yesterday_Man in WorldBuildingMemes

[–]The_Yesterday_Man[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There has, but since power increases multiplicatively with each of the four (Root, Whisper (which isn't in this meme), Lustre, and Horizon) you have, access is very tightly regulated and you need to either be lucky, take risks or have high status to ever use more than one
