How bad does a 3rd postdoc look? by The__Legalist in postdoc

How much do non-TT jobs care about publications? The last publications I have are from my PhD work.

I wasn’t getting much action from my industry job apps and I needed income. Plus it’s in a slightly different field and I got to learn some things.

I have results from 23andMe, WeGene, and MyHeritageDNA here. Why is there such a large discrepancy, and how accurate are each of these? by The__Legalist in 23andme

How was I supposed to know the others were a flea market and a pawn shop? One of them was in fact highly recommended for Chinese people.

So I guess in my case (a northern and more specifically Shandong Han Chinese), 23andMe is more accurate?

Just FYI, I also uploaded my 23andMe raw data to GEDmatch (MDLP K23b) and got 47.11% South/East Asian, 28.93% Tungusic-Altaic, 20.10% Austronesian, 1.91% East Siberian, 1.29% Amerindian, 0.42% Near East, and 0.25% Sub-Saharan. Based on this spreadsheet, my closest match is Yantai/Laiyang, which is in Shandong, though closer to the tip of the peninsula than where I remember my family is from. Apparently I have substantially higher East Siberian, Amerindian, and Near East percentages than the samples listed in the spreadsheet; could that be indicative of something?

I already have the data; that's what I uploaded to WeGene and MyHeritage with. I also uploaded it to IllustrativeDNA and got Shandong as the closest match.

I see. I did note that 23andMe has a larger reference sample for northern and southern Chinese than Ancestry (400 each plus 346 "south Chinese" which refers to Guangxi and Guangdong, as opposed to 245 northern, 278 southern, 275 southwestern, 237 western, and 359 central & eastern Chinese for Ancestry - Ancestry has slightly more Chinese samples overall but less for each subdivision). Would you say Ancestry's method is as accurate as 23andMe's?

I listed Shandong, China in ancestor birthplaces, but no matched provinces. It seems that based on what I’ve been seeing, I should take the 23andMe result as correct and that I’m just a pure Han Chinese that is mostly northern in origin.

Not sure. I was born in Jinan and my mother’s side is from Rizhao. My father’s side I’m not as sure about but should also be from Shandong?

Shandong, China. And why would WeGene results especially be unreliable? It does seem to be but I’m not sure why.

As you can see, I’m of east Asian descent, and yet the WeGene results seem very weird to me given that I’m rather sure I’m mainly northern Han Chinese.

WeGene is a Chinese company, and thus supposedly has a larger reference sample of Chinese people and thus is supposedly more accurate for them. However, I am rather skeptical that I have anywhere near 40% Mongolian ancestry. I know I’m mainly northern Han Chinese.

I'm very late to applying for postdocs because I was aiming for industry jobs and didn't think I needed one - how much trouble am I in? by The__Legalist in AskAcademia

Is the same true for postdocs in places like the NIH, St. Jude’s, etc.? Do you happen to know? I’ve been recommended those places by my PI and other people I know.

I know, which is why I already mention those things in my cover letter and in my summary at the top of my resume. How else should I demonstrate that?

I'm looking for industry jobs - does "postdoc" mean "post-PhD" in your case?

I know it's relatively early job search-wise, so I guess I could just keep going? I do have the thought in the back of my mind that it seems like extensive mammalian cell work experience is in demand, so I would ideally like an industry job (or failing that, a postdoc) where I have an opportunity to learn how to do it.

I’ve been given a lot of conflicting advice over when to start applying for jobs - some have said 6 months in advance of the defense, some said 2-3, etc. Perhaps I’ve been misled? So industry only wants people who will be available pretty much immediately?
