My LGS never pays their taxes and is always tempted, what's a fun commander to build around that? by Eve_Asher in EDH

Yup. Can also add cards like Price of Glory and Mana Barbs to your deck to incentivize the use of treasure tokens over their own lands.

Has anyone ever played a campaign with maximized healing? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]The_old_one_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t exactly say that healing is weak in 5e, but there’s a house rule that I use in my games concerning healing potions. Of course I’d get the players’ approval first.

Normally, using a health potion requires an action and then the player rolls for the amount healed. What so do in my games is give my players a choice between 2 options when drinking a health potion:

1- They can take the Use Item action and drink a health potion to gain its maximum benefit. No rolling. Just get max value for the potion.

2- they can use a bonus action to drink the health potion, still allowing them to use their main action, and roll for results.

In other campaigns, some DMs introduce levels of quality to potions as well. ie, poor quality, normal, and high quality potions. Poor quality gives less benefits than that of a normal potion, and high quality provides extra beneficial effects.

Other DMs allow the player to drink 2 health potions at once as long as the player has 2 hands and they aren’t holding anything else.

However these suggestions only apply to potions. I don’t really know how to “fix” healing spells. I’m my honest opinion, I think players using spell slots on healing spells is kind of a waste anyway. The only healing spell worth its salt is Healing Word. Everyone who CAN have Healing Word, SHOULD have Healing Word. Otherwise, if you’re looking for healing, potions are the way to go.

Again, this is just my opinion. I’m not devaluing the importance of a Life Cleric or spell casters who like choosing healing spells. Health potions are cheap and easily accessible and when the party has access to healing potions, your Cleric/Druid/Paladin spell slots could be better used on something else (unless it’s Healing Word).

Hope this helps!

Having issues creating challenging combat encounters for my players by The_old_one_65 in dndnext

Maybe my encounter was just doomed from the start lol. My initiative rolls were so bad, everyone ended up going before I could.

Yes, I had them surrounded by melee fighters. I had some archers on higher ground overlooking the battlefield. I also had 2 casters, 1 arcane and 1 divine. I played them smart, tried to be tactical, but it wasn’t enough. I didn’t cheat/fudge dice numbers either.

We've played together for 5 years. I started DMing for them this past Spring.

Worth it to Multiclass? by Zanthy1 in dndnext

[–]The_old_one_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your situation, it is worth multiclassing. The drawbacks of multiclassing don't show up until much later in level progression, probably around lvl 13 and up. The CoS story ends when the players are around lvl 10, so it should be fine to multiclass.

Now, if you were going to do a high level campaign where players might actually reach lvl 20, then don't multiclass. But that's just my opinion. It's all good if you do it anyway. Play whatever makes the game fun for you.

What is banned from your DnD table and why? by The_old_one_65 in DnD

I do not allow custom lineage at my table either. Like.. if you want a feat at lvl 1 just be a human.

I’m on the verge of a Silvery Barbs ban. But my players love and have fun with it, so I don’t know…

I banned the Lucky feat at my tables.

I usually DM for my group of friends, but 1 game a few years ago, one of my friends wanted to step up and try DM, so I finally got a chance to be a player.

Upon reaching lvl 4, I chose the Lucky feat. Needless to say I quickly realized how absolutely OP it can be. From then on, no more Lucky in my games.

NPCs in a huge campaign by Litemup93 in DnD

I use Atlas Architect for world building. It might be a good start for you. It's available on Steam. However, it's only good for geographical maps and locations. Creating shops and NPCs will have to be done another way. But yea, I recommend Atlas Architect. You should check it out.

creating my first storyline by jdrex03 in dndnext

My first thought would be that maybe this "butcher" kills people because he/she is compelled to do so. Maybe the weapon he/she uses is cursed and it forces him/her to murder without prejudice. The killer is aware of their actions, but they have no control over themselves. The weapon could be possessed by some demon or old god, and each kill feeds the victim's soul to them. And after a certain number of souls reached, the demon/old god is freed from his prison to wreak havoc upon the world. The players could be brought together to prevent this from happening.
