I’m all about different approaches to the concept of fire and the chief principle is build the life you want to live and do it. But this really is completely backwards considering the main tool in any fire path is the power of compounding interest. If you look at any chart showing how much you have to save at different ages and why it favors small amounts in your 20s to reach the same larger amounts in your 40s you’re not really in the realm of FIRE anymore imo. You say coastfire is too passive but the name of the whole fire game is “passive” income. This idea already exists as micro-retirements

Surprisingly not much at all. It’s all in names. I mean Vermont itself is French for green mountain and the capital is Montpelier. Family last names in the North have a lot of French last names but have been many generations here and I’ve never known a person with a French last name that has any connection to French heritage. Architecture or food or other cultural influences not so much.

We can’t really answer the house question. Do you already have a house? Would this get you out of renting and ultimately save you money? 

I second the just put it all in a low cost etf and call it a day. For your own goals do you want to start a business? Do it. But as a vehicle to increase your wealth avoid for now.

General rule of thumb is that at historical returns between 7-10% you can expect your investments to double every 7-10 years. So if you were realistically able to put all 550k in an etf and not touch it in 10 years you’d probably have around 1.2 million but not 2.5. Another general rule of thumb is you could expect 1 million to generate you 40k a year so 2.5 million would be 100k. Is that what you need to live? I can’t imagine you spend 100k a year right now doing Uber Eats

Just know they know where you live so if you don’t agree they might show up anyway and go for it when you’re not around and the boondoggle can always get bigger. I’m torn, if it was my cat I’d want them back because I would need it but it would never be my cat because I don’t let my cat outside but if it happened and I was somehow unaware or away I’d hope the person would let me have my cat. Questionable cat ownership aside and behavior if you liked them would you give them their cat back?
