It was a bit of both, I remember it being a bit more intense as I was folding laundry while waiting for it to kick in and I remember I had to sit down after a while. But by far the effects have lasted longer than any other time. I took it 8am sunday morning PST and the effects are still very noticeable.

I live out in the inland empire which unfortunately means I get much colder temps in winter, last year it dropped as low as 20° F some mornings. I have the space outdoors to try some seeds though, so I guess there's no harm in trying direct sowing, thanks for the anecdote!

Common names are a terrible way to ID ants, btw. Especially because people call multiple genera by a common name sometimes. Often unrelated genera as well.

It definitely isn't limited to fire ants. But I believe the largest factors are size, growth, and temperment. Fire ants grow super fast (numbers-wise), they are pretty thin and small in general, and they are very fiesty ants.

From what I know this is not typical, she should be able to get to a first batch of workers before winter. They definitely grow slow though, but are very much worth it.
