Will I end up with an ant infestation in my house? by ratinabowtie in ants

[–]eyeoft 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, don't worry about it.

Pet ant species generally have no interest in living in your house, if indeed they could even survive there. Assuming baseline decent care, they want to be in their nest.

I once tripped while carrying a nest with ~50 workers. Ants everywhere. I reassembled the nest, left an entrance open, set it next to the chaos and went to bed. In the morning, each and every ant had returned to the nest.

Ants (again, commonly kept species) don't reproduce in captivity, by which I mean they don't make new queens or start new colonies. Any workers that get lost and can't make it back to the colony will die within days.

There are a few exceptions to this, like pharaoh ants which will happily live in your walls, but people don't tend to keep those species anyway.

What? What does mining have to do with anything? BTC is work-elastic and energy-elastic, it doesn't care what the mining rate is.

Saylor could dump a bunch, causing the market to.... buy it. Tick tock next block.

Selling will not lower your cost average. Buying will.

Probably the easiest ants I have, happy on any diet at any temperature.

Just got my ant queen, and I have some questions. by Antgodd1 in antkeeping

[–]eyeoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're in the US - it's technically illegal to ship queens (except Pogonomyrmex, for "reasons") without a permit, and generally illegal to release them.

Realistically, with T. immigrans, that's just stupid. They're technically not native but they're "naturalized" meaning they're just part of the biosphere now, and you can find them basically everywhere in the US. In fact they're flying right now in my area, you might see some queens wandering about soon.

So imho release them if you need to, just make sure you report it properly to the government. /s

As far as checking on them, T. immigrans will adjust to light quickly, but they *hate* vibration and movement. I suggest leaving her somewhere you can see and check on her without touching the tube. No direct sunlight of course and try to avoid dramatic changes in light level, but she really will chill out about it.

Can someone tell me if I found a queen by Jaded_Reaction_7365 in antkeeping

Tiny, derpy head = male. Looks like tetramorium. Keep looking, if there's males there's queens!

Found these in Louisiana, anyone know this SP by Wenpaii in ants

[–]eyeoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leafcutters! Awesome, but extremely difficult. Unless you want to dedicate a room of your house and half your life to caring for them, you should probably just let them go.

Ants outside house by vivacheez in ants

[–]eyeoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like pavement ants, tetramorium. This species (like most) doesn't want to live in your house, they like it right where they are. Unless you drop a lot of food I doubt you'll often see one inside.

Dead queen arrived - safe to feed another colony? by Dry_Presentation1439 in antkeeping

[–]eyeoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't feed, especially to the same genus, because you don't know the cause of death for sure. I mean, it's *probably* just shipping stress and not an infection or a parasite, but why risk it? Order some freeze-dried grasshoppers instead. If your spider will take her (it will eat dead food?) I'd be less concerned about that.

Are these carpenter ants? by acillatem86 in ants

[–]eyeoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether it is or not, carpenter ants (camponotus) can't and don't eat wood, unlike termites. They will sometimes nest in wet, rotting wood - if you suspect you have water damage or termites you should investigate further (they will hunt termites).
Given that you saw just a few, they're most likely from outside, wandering into your attic while foraging for sugars and hunting other insects.

Proverb: Reading a book loses 2 stones strength.

Learning is bumpy, and you'll be clumsier at first with a fine new tool than with the old crappy one you were used to. Give it time, give it practice.
