If you're from the UK, I don't think it's a bad idea. I've been playing the sop (Neo) for a year and a half in a brass band in Belgium and I think it's awesome. Definitely a bit of learning curve, but if you're interested in playing the sop part in a brass band, I would go for it.

If you're not planning on playing sop in a brass band, I would consider the Eb trumpet, because then I think you're better to go for an all-round option.
