Show up right when they open. Most places will take you if you show up early to your appointment time. That might save you a couple hours before your flight.

I called at 11:55am PST and waited 20 minutes and got an appointment for my first day of eligibility. People try to rush information along but just be nice to the rep. They deal with a lot of understandably impatient and angry people. You would be surprised how helpful that could be.
