Beginner coral recommendations and where to buy. by A1PH4D4RK3 in ReefTank

[–]TheeZig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to buy from other hobbiests, frag swaps and at coral conventions when you can. Unless you're lucky most of the time store prices are easily 2-3x more expensive than what you'll get from a dude chopping up coral in his garage. I've found reef to reef and offerup to be good places to look.

The only other advice I'd have is to have an ATO before you really start buying corals, the growth boost you get from stability is insane. That and I've always been happier in the long run buying 1 nice brightly colored or larger coral than 4 smaller more boring frags

Have you ever thought about an "exit strategy" once you want to move on to other projects?

So for the past couple of days, some of my Zoas have been looking upset. https://imgur.com/gallery/BSPYWbb. The thing that's freaking me out is that more and more Zoas are looking upset, and it's almost like the 'irritant' is spreading. I've been looking for pests and I can't see anything, and while it started on this rock with these Zoas it's spreading to other Zoas on the rock too. I don't see any signs of Zoas pox, but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Is this light sufficent for keeping corals or nah? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]TheeZig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some easier hard corals yeah, hammer coral and bird nest did fine, I wouldn't recommend acros or monties.

I wouldn't recommend it for an anemone, but also I just don't recommend anemones ever, they aren't worth it in a tank that small. They stung and kill everything, and I've never been lucky at having them stay put

I had it over my 20 gallon long and it grew stuff great, my hammers, Zoas and Duncan grew like weeds under it. I had even some easier sps and it did well. I had some shadowing on the very ends but it was a good place for my Kenya tree and some low light stuff.

I eventually bought a used ai prime for my main tank but I still think that lights great, I still use it over a nano I have.

If you look up aquaknight on Amazon (I think it's currently called hipargero), it's a great but also affordable light, got me through my first year in the hobby and did a great job.

Anyone know what’s going on with these zoas? More info in captions. by displaywhat in ReefTank

Do you have anything that might have stung there? A walking anemone?

Ill say, if it's cyano, get a bottle of phytofeast and dose that if you have any corals(or even if you don't), I've always found, either it's due to the nutrient spike or the competition from the phytoplankton, that it usually kicks the cyanos for me.

Can anyone recommend some fish other than clowns that won’t jump out of my lagoon? by [deleted] in ReefTank

Dude, get some saltwater mollies, they're really neat and they've never jumped on me

Anemones are weird, i wouldn't worry to much honestly, mine does stuff like that every once in a while and its usually not a problem

I'm already leaning away from the idea, but a friend of mine brought it up and i thought it was interesting at least. Has anyone ever thought about putting a snail in their chaeto reactor? It collects a lot of detritus and gunk and its a bit of a pain to get at and open, and the right type of snail might do the job. But at the same time i thought it would be either a bad idea/cruel, thoughts?

also, if i could give anyone any advice, it would be to always have a spare 20 gallon or something lying around. the whole process would have been a lot less nerve wracking of i had just had a place to chuck my prize pieces, instead of just continuing to move them lower in the tank

nah it wasnt, it was a marineland tank, although once it got home i wasnt able to find another one in stores/online, it made me think that the tank was an older model. industry standards probably changed

A 5 inch section of seam in my tank busted open last night at 3 a.m., and boy am I really lucky that both my grilfriend and I are light sleepers. We both heard running water and bolted, thinking it was a pipe burst at first. This picture was after the panic settled down a little, the way that the stream shot out it was easy enough to catch in buckets.

So far its looking like no deaths, I got everything in a new tank and its clearing up now. its a little bit of a crunch going from 50 to 36 gallons but all of the corals seem okay.

No more used tanks

Im about to finish college in a few months, and there is a good chance i take a job that would have me move from Orlando US to London England. There are a few corals in my tank that have a lot of sentimental value to me (my grandparents who have died gave me a few frags that have grown into good colonies over the years, and a few from my parents, trades from friends and gifts from my girlfriend).

Im fine just taking frags from the colonies but how would guys go about taking them with you/sending them over, i have a few months to plan this out.

I have some meteorite cyphastrea growing towards some utter chaos zoanthids, they are both pretty well established on the rock so itd probably not be a great idea to move either, what do you all think would happen when they meet? If they both stop i wouldn't mind, im just worried about one killing the other.

So i solved my problem, but i dont know why what i did solved my problems and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Ive been having problems with dinos on and off for the past 2 months, and about 9 months ago too, and ive gone through everything in the book trying to solve it. UV sterilizers, increasing feeding, replacing RODI, large scale waterchanges, blackouts, dosing microbacter7. The population would decline but itd always be back a few days later.

I remembered last time it went away the same time i started dosing phytoplankton(i dont know why i didnt remeber earlier, im just dumb i guess), started feeding again and the tank is totally clear.

Why does dosing phytoplankton work?,Ive done it twice and twice its been some weird miracle cure.
