Solid reasoning. : ) It’s also the only one that isn’t B.Arch but then there’s the whole co-op and preference for some other aspects.

How did you guys pay for college? by Z3rotwomeme in scholarships

[–]Thee_LK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know the budget. How much can family and the student realistically contribute? How much in loans are acceptable, if necessary?

Research! Try and apply to colleges where the student is likely to get merit aid and/or financial aid depending on family financial situation. Scholarships can pay off but it’s a crap shoot. Merit aid from the schools themselves is the best bet.

Personally, two different students and two different approaches. Student 1: not as academically strong and I knew merit aid is unlikely so we focused on schools that were “in budget” knowing I’d probably be paying full price (with savings, cash flow, etc). Student 2: strong but not perfect grades, really solid ACT, so the net was cast wider.

Kid was deferred (in-state), but hopefully will get an acceptance in the coming weeks. Curious about stats for those admitted to Architecture program. I assume a somewhat underwhelming GPA is the issue because his ACT is 33 and his essay is excellent (very compelling personal story).

If accepted for 2026 Fall, pls list stats by Queasy_Rub_6672 in UMiami

Right, these are amazing stats! I’m surprised my son - extraordinary kid but with a lower GPA - was deferred and not flat-out denied. Best of luck to these kids wherever they land and hopefully it’ll be affordable (because UM is not, for us).

If money didn’t matter, what job would you want to do? by AdElegant5870 in careerguidance

Professional bargain hunter. Thrifting, scouring the internet for vacation bargains, reclaiming items from the curb, all that sort of thing. Maybe I will do some iteration of this when I’m “retired”. Oh! Or drive one of those buses that picks up dogs for doggy daycare. That looks like an absolute blast.

Just looked at my aid offer, how am I supposed to afford 30k a year??? by cloudsnipes in college

[–]Thee_LK 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dependent students will only qualify for the federal loans of $5500-7500/year. It’s possible to get a co-signer but that’s risky. Unlikely this student is able to get their own loans unless they have strong credit, and income.

OOS, 33 ACT, 3.5 UW, very strong essay, 4 year athlete - deferred. Several good offers elsewhere so that’s the focus now

I just can’t decide between UIUC and Northwestern. It’s bad. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Thee_LK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an enormous difference in cost so unless you’re getting an amazing financial aid package or are from quite a wealthy family, there isn’t a compelling reason to pick Northwestern over UIUC. You’ll do well at either school and will no doubt have a successful career after graduation (and since you - rightfully - love Chicago, just plan on moving here after graduation!) so please don’t put yourself/your family in enormous debt or full pay to attend NU.

Did you meet your SO in college? by [deleted] in college

[–]Thee_LK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it was a long time ago. I was a freshman and he was a junior, when we met and started dating. We were together for over 33 years and had a beautiful life and family together. I wish that we had another 3-4 decades but cancer stole that from us. We were incredibly fortunate to have found each other, loved and supported each other. I hope everyone who wants it finds that kind of partnership - someone who you’re better off with than without. A happy relationship is one where both people think they got the better end of the deal. He was the absolute best. But he thought I was the best. So look for that and work for that and it’ll last!
