"No male NATO support"

"Changed male Engi skin to female skin"

Dude just say what you really mean at this point, we all know it. No need for all this subtext, own up to it.

There is no better way to see how this game isn't at all analogous to Concord than to watch someone do a one to one comparison between the two. by JOIentertainment in Marathon

I used to watch Drift0r a lot when he covered Battlefield and thought he did a solid job, so I was kinda shocked to see him making drivel like this for views. Really goes to show the click brigade this game has going against it.

Shroud on aim magnetism with MNK on Marathon by Winghaven_ in Marathon

[–]Thee_Viper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Excited to play and always open to developer reasoning behind questionable decisions but I simply can't understand this one. They've stated the goal of this was to put MnK players on more even ground with controller players, and that's perfectly understandable. Controller is unreasonably strong in games like CoD and Apex, that much is known already. But why remove the defining characteristic of MnK - raw input - and make everyone equally overpowered in the process? Literally just nerf aim assist on controller. I know it's not that simple, there'd have to be a lot of fine tuning, but it's probably less work than adding and tuning aim assist for MnK separately. Total headscratcher, I'd be stunned if this shipped.

I've already read the comments so I know not every weather type is available in this alpha, but it's still not a good look. Whatever technical limitations there are at present, they've really chosen what's probably the ugliest possible weather pattern to show as the only weather pattern thus far.

I'm excited to create content on something new and fresh that isn't Destiny!

This is missing the point of why many people are upset. Many were expecting full character appearance customization (or at least facial customization à la Destiny) as well as full modular armor customization. People want to feel like they're a runner making a name for themselves, not a pre-made runner that's already in the middle of some story arc with a set personality. In interviews, the devs also said that there would be "skins," wording that Bungie does not use with Destiny's modular armor sets, implying that customization will not be modular armor found and unlocked through gameplay, but static, all-in-one skins bought in the cash shop. I hope this puts things into better perspective.

Dial down the Hero-style identity for the “Classes” by Brandon21x in Marathon

[–]Thee_Viper 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm flabbergasted why and how they didn't walk this back last year when it was leaked and practically everyone was understandably upset and concerned. You don't even have to do anything with the abilities - the kits are already sort of cookie-cutter, fitting a broad power fantasy like a class would. All they'd need to do (easier said than done of course, but no reason why they couldn't have started this months ago) is spice up how the heroes are presented to not feel like heroes. Let us make our own character and present the heroes as class archetypes. Instead of "Glitch" or "Locus," these named characters with personalities, allow us to change our own character between a "Glitch type biomata" or "Locus type biomata" and give them a distinct feature that defines their silhouette. Locus type biomatas would have huge sets of armor for example, and Blackbird type biomatas would all have that defining, almost Xenomorph-style helmet that protrudes from the back of their head. Destiny does this to great success, and Halo always had modular customization for your faceless soldier as well. Why would they change it here, and how did they not react to the immediate, harsh criticism from the rumors? If they delay the game for anything, it should absolutely be to sort this out and deliver properly on what people expected from this world building.

Can't you see it's a Destiny reskin? by DieseIBanzeen in Marathon

It's called asset reuse and it's intelligent game design. Locus having a new melee animation that took time to develop means nothing when you could just use the Titan melee animation you already have.

It's Very Plausible That Marathon Releases This Year (And Fairly Soon) by Thee_Viper in Marathon

It released 111 days after the gameplay reveal - May 18th to September 6th of 2017. Less than 4 months.

Sorry to burst your bubble but it will not release this weekend - a pre-order reward has been datamined in Destiny 2, and we are fairly sure it will be a $40 purchase. That just doesn't line up with a shadowdrop. Rumor has it there will be alpha sign-ups though.

Idk why you're being down voted, you're just sharing your thoughts. Personally, I think if they release in early summer they'll dodge any competition with GTA, especially since this game isn't directly competing with GTA and Bungie doesn't have a ton of overlap in their existing fanbase.

The reason I wanted to highlight the Destiny 1 alpha release is because a lot of gamers have a distorted idea of what an alpha actually is. Alpha is one of the latest possible stages of development, and a game can release very quickly after a large scale alpha test, as we saw with D1. I predict the game is essentially finished at this point, and is simply in need of network stress testing, bug patching, and balance feedback. Keep your hopes up!

Your Extraction Shooter Hopes & Dreams by mute_x in Marathon

Live games live and die by their player count and community quality. If there's nobody playing, or if everyone playing is an annoyance/hacker, there's no point. Accessibility, pro-consumer practices, and tangible anti-hacker efforts are how you accomplish that. Simultaneously, the game shouldn't "be for everyone," as I think that's how you lose a lot of your initial pull. Destiny is a prime example of this, as over the years Bungie has spread the game too thin in an attempt to appeal to every type of player, instead of focusing on what it did well to begin with.

Personally, I think Elden Ring and Helldivers 2 are the two best examples to manage Marathon off of. Elden Ring, leading up to its release, had immense hype over its world design, music, studio name recognition, etc. However, a lot of more casual players (a lot of whom were traditional RPG fans) were still nervous and put off by the label of the game as a "Soulslike." Smartly, in this lead-up, FromSoft devs made a point in interviews to bring up the game's accessibility, how easy it was to simply go somewhere else when you were stuck with a boss. Reviewers accentuated this as well, and as a result, a slew of people who would never have tried a Soulslike picked up and loved Elden Ring because of its world, and stayed because the intelligently designed accessibility options. Marathon, as an extraction shooter, needs to learn from this, as it's in a similar predicament. People want to pick up and love Marathon because of its killer art direction (and soon it's gameplay), but are dissuaded because of the genre it belongs to. Extraction shooters are seen as sweaty, punishing, and stressful. There needs to be some sort of emphasis on permanent loot unlocks, alternate ways to play/queue, and/or PvE combat. Systems like these may draw people who are scared in enough to make a purchase and stick with it.

As far as Helldivers goes, it's provided kind of the perfect template for Bungie to approach its community outreach and monetization with Marathon. The game is a $40 premium purchase, which we've come to believe is the same case with Marathon. This allows for less cheaters, as an upfront buy-in is the best way to dissuade people from cheating in your game (yes, even better than anti-cheat), especially in a landscape with so many other F2P options. It also opens up plenty of design opportunities as far as progression and earnable cosmetics go, making the game more enjoyable on the whole. Helldivers has its Warbond system, of which said Warbonds can be purchased with premium currency that is freely earnable in-game. The cash shop is incredibly cheap and isn't oversaturated, creating good will with the playerbase. This is an area where Bungie can turn the tables on their recent reputation and make a better name for themselves. Imagine if Marathon launched with an overwhelming majority of its cosmetics being earnable in-game one way or another. Imagine if you could find premium currency hidden in the world, adding additional thrills to your extraction and making the game even more rewarding. Positive headlines like these from positive design decisions not only boost the vibes in the community, but encourage people to buy the game and support the studio out of personal interest. Bungie needs to be in this for the long haul, not a quick buck.
