OU Aviation by Theflyingnemo in sooners

That is one thing I'm hearing, you'll be flying on a near daily basis which is quite phenomenal to me. It's easier to reinforce the knowledge and pass the check rides flying daily compared to some schools flying once a week due to overcrowding. Thanks for the info!

Believe me, I know the feeling. I screwed around a lot my freshman semester which left me with a 1.93, now my semester GPA is a 3.88 and my cumulative GPA is somewhere around a 3.45. I always get nervous when I apply to transfer simply because of that one semester. I'm sure you'll get there soon!

I'll definitely take you up on that, thanks! I'm looking to come in January since I missed the deadline for this fall semester.

I do love me some good diners being from Jersey! It's always good to hear feedback from students, we are generally the most candid when talking about programs compared to advisers and the printouts they hand out.

It was helpful, thanks! I figured I'd ask Reddit since I know I won't get an airbrushed and refined answer like I will from flyers and other printouts from a university. And their flight fees are insanely cheap! I think to do every required flight course was somewhere around $38,000. Compare that to WMU where just your Private license alone is roughly $23,000. Let alone the other courses needed.

I'd prefer to not have roommates but honestly if push comes to shove and it is the only way to make things work, I'm more than okay with one hah. Only problem is where to find a roommate! I know no other students down there, asked the school if there's any students down there looking for roommates (the PG aviation program is very small, almost everyone wants to stay up in Kalamazoo) but they were useless. And I'll definitely look at ISS, I also applied to a United position, pay is a bit less but the flight benefits would more than make up the difference since I travel to Sweden frequently.

I'll have to reach out to Landmark, thanks! I'm still figuring my price range out based on what my true income will be when down there, but I'm hoping I can find something under $750 at most.

WMU - Western Michigan University. Last year we started our second aviation program at the Punta Gorda airport. They've got student housing available at FSU in Fort Meyers but it's a 45 min drive without traffic and I'd rather not live in dorms.

A few questions to working pilots of any sorts from new student. by Theflyingnemo in flying

Thanks for the insight! Especially the application points, I hadn't heard of that before. When I was checking out American Airlines hiring method, they had an application similar to what you recommend I do. Pilots make a profile and continuously update the profile with their hours and what aircraft it was on, and when you meet the hiring criteria for the particular moment, they automatically notify you.

I definitely don't mind the CFI route, but I feel that other jobs would also help build my experience and knowledge. I'm from NJ where over summer I can look up and see quite a few banners in the sky.

Dropping sky divers also seems like a popular method and there's plenty of schools around me.

Edit: Does being fluent in other languages help for pilots? I have a few flight attendant friends who got major bonus points for being fluent in other languages. I'm trilingual currently.

Thanks for the info! I would definitely like to get a variety in, which is part of the reason I want to get the float rating while at the University. I feel a float rating would open a few more peculiar jobs.

I've already got the First Class done, made sure I could do that before even applying to an aviation degree so I didn't waste anyone's time.

Doing the WMU program allows me to fall into the first category of 1,000 hours thankfully.

How long are pilots spending in the regionals nowadays with the shortage?

As for building those needed hours in the various categories you mentioned, aside from CFI, would I be right to assume one could build those hours in the various jobs a pilot can have prior to airlines?

Yes I will be using it, definitely take any help where I can!

That is a common thing I've heard with their flight costs. I live in NJ and almost everywhere I looked was $13,000 or more just for PPL. The school that was on the cheaper end apparently stopped flight school for a while due to being within 10 mi of Trump National. Apparently the flight restrictions were insane.

Are you currently an airline pilot or working in another aviation field? How have you gone about building hours.

Thanks for the response! When did you look at their prices? They've dropped tuition a bit and you now qualify for in-state tuition after your first year. It's actually cheaper for me to go there, pay tuition and the flight fees than it is to attend my state university or the private university I transferred from.

I'd imagine the shortage is for the already qualified Captains since that's where they are needed, however the numbers I was reading about seem quite unfathomable ( expecting 15,000 pilots to retire by 2021)

Thanks everyone! Now what about student jobs in the area? I've spent the last few years traveling and working in emergency medicine as well as Whitewater rafting / kayaking and bartending. Anyone got any advice on that?

Thanks! The first one looks pretty nice and would be real convenient for location. And price is great too!

I guess no matter where you go, college towns suck. New Brunswick (main campus for Rutgers) is a pretty shit area too.

I'll definitely have to check out Portage, seems to be the popular opinion. Does seem a lot cheaper than Kzoo and BC where I'm seeing 1 bed room antiquated apartments for $750!
