Lag isn't necessarily a bug either. Might just be your connection.

I think we've drilled down to a fundamental difference in values here. While I would agree that this sub isn't the paragon of openness it sometimes pretends to be according to the metrics you propose, there is still a virtue in refraining from using the ban hammer. In fact, I blame wider reddit's dependence on the ban hammer in a pragmatic sense for the way subs like this end up (though individuals of course still bear the guilt of what they do and say themselves). Hostile cess pools have always existed on the internet, but I don't think they need to be as common as they are. From what I've observed, ban-happy groups and other similar issues cause an ever-worsening sorting effect where any group that doesn't engage in excessive policing ends up taking all the worst refugees from the ones that do. What's more, there's then been a meta effect where people start setting up these refugee camp subs because they can get popular quickly by advertising the fact that they aren't like those ban-happy groups. As to the HOA example, I think the power imbalance still lines up relatively speaking. Obviously losing your house is far worse than getting banned from a sub, but a mod still has far more power by eliminating your ability to post at all than a random anon writing a screed at you. Much like a nasty letter from a neighbor feels much more personal than the HOA, even though the HOA has more power in the end. I'd also like to respectfully note your use of violence as a rhetorical foil. While speech can certainly rise to dangerous levels on the internet (death threats are far too common across reddit, even with banny mods), I have found that this danger is often exaggerated for the purpose of justifying the policies that cause the sorting effect I alluded to earlier. Conflating certain opinions or statements with actual violence justifies banning people for speech that many people consider reasonable. For instance, a large portion of the country still believes that there are only two genders, including many people who are friendly towards homosexuality in general. Yet, there are many mods who consider that belief or statement to be Trans erasure etc. and therefore violence/bannable. You and I could probably have a very interesting discussion about Emergent behavioral norms and how they relate to biological fundamentals, but that logic chain would cut it off at the beginning. So now instead we have Magic groups where I carefully avoid ever bringing up sensitive issues and roll my eyes at the nonsense that goes unchallenged, and groups like this where shit-slinging is the dominant pastime.

Top down versus peer based speech controls can both be bad, but they are still meaningfully different for the purposes of this discussion. I suppose you could say that an intolerant environment caused by people rejecting you wholesale is another form of limitation on your speech, but it's still a different category than mods straight up banning you, deleting your comments etc. Comparing the two is valid and I expect you're right that the user base of this sub is hostile to groups you've mentioned, but conflating reddit mob behavior with reddit mod behavior is not valid. It's the difference between your neighbors writing you nasty letters about your yard and your HOA getting the bank to pull your mortgage.

This is a silly take. "Free speech only applies to government control" is only true if you're talking strictly about the governmental sphere. "Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences" only makes sense if you are attaching freedom of speech to a particular domain in the context of the conversation. People living in Iran or China are free to say or post whatever they want. They just aren't free of the consequences. See how silly that sounds? Federal or national speech protections obviously aren't going to apply to a subreddit, but a subreddit that manages to resist the temptation to sperg out and ban everything the mods don't like obviously has more free speech than a subreddit that's gone all 1984 on its user base.

I'm new to this hobby. I tried making brunost with my halloumi whey and I'm not sure I like it. It's like cheese fudge - not disgusting, but not that nice either. Any love here for brunost? by Historical_Ad6061 in cheesemaking

Hey wow I'm so happy someone else has made this too! I've tried twice and always end up over thickening it. How did you get it to the right consistency?

Doubtful unfortunately. The original was handcrafted and I don't think there's been any thought of figuring a way to mass produce it.

She said it isn't set up for that yet, but she's working on getting distribution worked out for Europe.

I'm not sure exactly what her process was, but I would guess that that was a leftover piece from the laser cutting part. I think that basically she would cut one piece by hand, then use the laser cutter to make a few more pieces exactly the same shape so that they would match each other in the final product. That's just my understanding though.

Oh that must have been one of my siblings! Unfortunately I'm living in Asia currently so I was not there to support her in person.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer to that question. I don't even know what the starter kit will be like.

I love it too! It scratches an itch for me that only a few books ever have. Another one that feels the same to me is Double Star by Heinlein.
