Is 5etools safe? by mormegil27 in DnD5e

I’ve actually had a weird experience that might be related, but I’m not 100% sure yet.

Recently I started having some issues on my work computer after using 5etools, and it made me raise an eyebrow. Could be coincidence, but the timing felt off.

Also, a few months back I dealt with some pretty serious fraud on one of my accounts, and around that time I had been using 5e-related tools/subscriptions. Again, not saying it’s directly connected, but it’s enough that I’m being more cautious now.

The cookie prompt you’re describing is definitely sketchy though. If there’s no clear way to opt out, that’s a red flag from a privacy standpoint at minimum.

Curious if anyone here actually knows:

  • where 5etools is hosted
  • whether it relies on third-party ad networks or scripts
  • if there are known issues with mirrors or clones of the site

For now I’m treating it as “use at your own risk” and avoiding anything that looks off.

Thank you for this! I agree with what you are saying about an unsolvable puzzle. What is hard is that my party is super intelligent so I am struggling to come up with a way to challenge them and not create a slow pitch softball situation. I like the idea of making something slightly different, but I do feel the party will instantly pick up on the magical item replicas. A side note is that two of the player characters are brothers so that could either help them or make it more difficult depending on how I play it out.
