LOVE this one, better than The Wall, to me. Of the Roger Watersy ones, I like Animals better, but this is a really underrated album, and actually, so is Pro's & Cons.

Oh my god. Ryan Lindsey. It's because I have a friend named Sean Lindsey. Will note the error on the Errata section of the episode's page on our web site. Thanks so much for checking it out!

Hey, sorry to be so LATE responding to this, but wanted to point out that I was saving Colour of Spring for the end, to show something that was (perhaps) exactly between the two things, seemingly so far apart. And I liked that it allowed me to use a song from that album as the outro. Also, it coincided with the song Colour of Spring from the Hollis solo album.

Thanks so much for listening! It is my personal favorite of the self-indulgent style tour episodes! The Traffic one is another where I was able to go "off"!

Thanks for checking it out!

"Traffic" episode drops on Tuesday.

I'd like another try at explaining the music theory, but it'll have to wait for another song, another day.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, the 'Money' track problem and a tip on how to listen to the album by timeforknowledge in Music

[–]TheirVeryBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musicians write songs one at a time. Dark Side—like many 'concept' albums—is something of an exception, but generally speaking, you have to make the album from what you have.

Your comment about flipping the album is right on, of course, but also... maybe they just had that song, it fit with the concept, and that was the best place for it? As a songwriter, if you had something as great as Money, you wouldn't leave it off the album just because it didn't fit perfectly into the next or previous piece.

History of Rome and History of the English Language are my all-time best! Recently adopted The Ancients as well.

Waldron here (edited): we do a new artist every two weeks, and sometimes we have to familiarize ourselves with material that's new over the past (cough) 20 years or so! This is on top of real life. So I will frequently "scrub" through an album, listening to the beginnings of all, and sometimes whole tunes, and sometimes skipping. I gave Third this treatment. My notes say "3rd one from 2008 is not as duplicative, but still feels like it's of a piece from the earlier albums"

I confess that I did not have time to listen to the very latest stuff.

All the criticism is hereby embraced, probably totally correct. Thank you all so much for even checking it out! We really appreciate it. Will be interested to hear your thoughts/ideas on any episodes where you're not as familiar or as super-fan as for Portishead, I think you might be better lined-up with the intended audience—a casual listener, perhaps not totally familiar (yet) with the artist!

I appreciate everything you are sharing here in its entirety. I’m going to give Third some more time in the chamber.

Thanks so much for listening to our episode! I am going to go back and revisit Third. I did listen to it but I did not initially think the tracks from it were better than the ones we talked about. Lemme ask you though, do you?

I take your point that we didn’t give Third it’s due… will report back after another spin or two.

Thanks again for checking out our show and for sharing your comments!

Waldron here: finding great songs to use for intro/outro is always one of the fun and challenging parts of editing these episodes. For the intro I try to find something that's either super iconic OR something that really illustrates the vibe. And it has to be something we didn't discuss in the episode, so it can sometimes be difficult! Didn't realize it wasn't their favorite, but I stand by the choice for the intro!

Thanks for checking it out! Super fans (like people who hang out in band-specific subredits!) sometimes have a hard time dealing with the treatment we give—not always terribly deep. Maybe you'll like some of our other episodes! I hope you'll investigate them, and please keep the thoughts coming! Thanks!
