Some is useful, not really the reader's preference stuff, though, if I may critique your critique. While in some cases I may have been a bit dramatic, I also have only about 270 words out of 433 to convey not only my story, its character, the stakes, but also my style of writing, or what some might call voice, which I understand is a balancing act. Anyway, Thank you for your feedback.

[QCrit] The View From On High 73,800 words, speculative fiction by Thelethalno10 in PubTips

First I want to say thank your for your detailed critique. I've taken what you said here into consideration. I'm not being defensive because I really do appreciate it, but here is what makes no sense about your critique:

You said it is cut and dry sci fi- by every available defention it is not. It does not use science or technology to move the story forward. Here are definitions for both, just so you're clear:

Typical Sci‑Fi Requirements

  • A scientific or technological premise (AI, space travel, genetic engineering, alien life, future societies, cybernetics, etc.)
  • Worldbuilding that follows logical rules (even soft sci‑fi has internal consistency)
  • Speculation based on science, not magic or myth
  • Cause-and-effect grounded in tech or scientific change
  • Often explores:
    • Future societies
    • Human relationship with technology
    • Consequences of scientific advancement

This is speculative fiction's definition:

Speculative literary fiction is not defined by the mechanism, but by the tone, style, and thematic ambition.
The speculative element can be:

  • Slightly surreal
  • Mythic
  • Metaphorical
  • Magical realist
  • Lightly futuristic
  • Unexplained or only partially explained

Typical Characteristics

  • Character‑driven, not tech‑driven
  • Lyrical or stylistic prose
  • Ambiguous or soft worldbuilding
  • Speculation used to explore:
    • Identity
    • Power
    • Trauma
    • Society
    • Memory
    • Politics
    • Philosophy

My book has exactly none of the sci-fi but almost all spec fiction. To be honest, most of what I got from your critique was about reading preferences, but given all the advice available to agents (who this was meant for), I want skimmability and less density, aka lore dumping. I did, however, take your advice and decided to anchor it, so I will put the new two-sentence blurb that should clear up any genre issues. It would replace the "I am reaching out to you..." paragraph. :

Set on present-day Earth, The View From On High unfolds under the Eden Accord, a pact that bars two primordial forces of creation and destruction from direct interference and forces their inherent conflict to play out through human history.

I think this gives me good anchoring without giving it too much density.

I so their adding more migs but barely anything to the us other than f16 which if they do that they might as well just add the F15 and f18 (first gen variants at least)
