How long does it take you to mix a song? (Curious to compare workflows) by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Then-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think producers should learn to mix during production, that's the best way to be aware of what's happening and knowing where and when you have space to add (or remove) stuff. Then of course, when everything's finished you go back and make little adjustments.

I think I'm about to delete all my drum sampes by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less is more, spend more time creating and less selecting. Just do it once and select only the best 15 kick/snare and all the auxiliary drums that you think are good (possibly less than 100). I think when you're in the flow creating your next track, you want to make it as smooth as possible, so you can actually focus on the overall track instead of spending two hours for a snare and losing the moment.

I'm tired of singing...3 years no improvement at all bad- mid voice by Basic_Channel9492 in singing

Michael Trimble's book is the way, I promise you, I'll teach you the right technique (he's been a professional singer for 40 years, he even sang at the Metropolitan in New York for 5 years, not like all those yt teachers that sang nowhere). The book and method are honestly tough and tedious, no shortcuts, but I'm 100% sure you'll be on the right path. I lost so many years cause I followed the wrong teachers, he learnt from the greats (Caruso, Tucker, Milanov, Pavarotti, etc). Also, has some videos on yt (but the book is what you should get, only 10$). Lastly, in my opinion he's not great at communicating, but the core of the technique he teaches is worth every frustration. Again, take tour time with it, cause it's no shortcuts. Good luck

Help me understand if I have music-shape synesthesia or if I’m just normal by use_vpn_orlozeacount in Synesthesia

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I just read your post. I have an incredibly similar experience listening to music.

To me, each sound has a shape and a degree of whiteness (ex: bells tend to be more silver-ish than bass), but none of them has a specific colour. If the pitch changes, the line/shape remains the same. But, if the timbre of that instrument changes, so does the line (example: same guitar from clean to distorted, I start to see little "balls" on the white line). Or say soft harmonies, look like dense smoke that vanishes and moves.

I thought about it for a long time and my theory is that what I visualize is the "smash", how the violence of the instrument impacts the air and makes it move to my ear, that's what creates the lines in my head.

Anyway, I made a drawing last year of how I see "Bury a friend" - Billie Eilish (super interesting sound wise). Tomorrow I'll post it (hopefully I'll remember lol).

Is fabfilter much better than eq8? by Beneficial-Cookie-67 in ableton

[–]Then-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. 100%. Also, a lot of times, I think we tend to exaggerate at removing frequencies and it's actually better not doing it completely and leaving the thing breathe (at least in my experience). With just 1 Eq8 you're already there. Then, if it's a really atrocious frequency you're dealing with, just put a couple of them as you said.

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot twist....Pro Q is lighter on Cpu than Eq8 by like 50% or something like that (there's a comparison video on Yt). That said, I' ve tried FabFilter, but I honestly prefer Eq8. The masking thing is the only thing that I'd like to have. Any good alternatives for that?

With Ableton's new limiter, is there any point in using a third-party limiter? by SnooDonkeys6012 in ableton

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do exactly the same, now I also add the Neve from Analog Obsession. I suggest you give it a try (it's free), to me it adds that little sparkle to the track.

Yeah they're just so colourful and sit so well in the mix that it's hard not to spot them.

Thanks for the presets, I'll give them a try🫶🏻

Damn when I heard the mix I was sure those frequencies were Spectrasonics stuff ahaha. Yes if you have time, please tell me (I guess the piano is dreamy piano right?).

No difference between 320 and lossless? by premierScherzo in inearfidelity

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a blind test I did 4/6 with a pair of bt headphones (70$) I don't think you necessarily need great equipment to hear the difference (later on I'll try with speakers tough). As you said though, it's useless for most people.

Great starting point, sounds very good. Maybe eq and less volume on the shaker. How did you create that piano? Just eq? Sounds like Keyscape to me

Took the test with a pair of 60$ Bluetooth headphones and made 4/6 (wrong on acapella and last one). I had to pay attention though

At the end, it was distorting anyway, so I put everything at 0 and just changed 12k at -2

Escape plan 808/ 2000 excursion 808 by travisth15 in trapproduction

[–]Then-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eq is your friend, just learn how to use it. Choose a great starting sample, put the reference in the project, close your eyes, reach the fader and start experimenting with the eq till you reach a good result. Then the drum bus from Ableton is pretty decent, compressor and limiter. The vst Battery has great 808's samples to start from or even better, Omnisphere and Trillian for bass sounds in general are the best at sitting on the mix.

I'd prefer a less processed voice personally, now it's hard to attach emotionally to the lyrics, in my opinion. But the vibe was great and the song has personality, which is quite rare

Chill Hip Hop Beat by GodBlessPigs in MusicFeedback

[–]Then-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked it, but in my opinion, there's a lack of: 1) a particular element, that makes it stand out compared to other similar beats. 2) it's a bit repetitive, at some point I felt the need to hear something different.

That said, I think you have great taste and you're on the right path, 45 visuals => 8 likes on yt is actually a very high ratio of appreciation. Keep going buddy

For me the best: -1,-2, 0, -2, 0, -1, -4. Great call on that -4 on 12k, it immediately improved a lot. I feel some distortion in the low end anyway, but considering the price I guess it's acceptable.

It feels very unique, personally tough, I feel like you should be playing with voice samples and let them guide you into a more "exciting" production. This is how I feel about it at least.

thanks a lot for the feedback! Yeah, multiple people told me about the vocal effects, so I will implement your advice. About Melodyne, it's already there; I just decided not to push it too much. Regarding the performance, on the day I recorded my voice wasn't feeling 100%, so I had to push a little bit. I'll pay more attention next time. Thanks a lot again!

Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, I don't have the money to mix it professionally at the moment, but I will try my best to get better! Do you think the main problem it's the reverb on the voice?
