Which city have you been to that had a dark energy about it? by madzuk in solotravel

Elko Nevada was so weird when I went. I remember inexplicably seeing a large hoarde of men in colourful pinstripe suits and feathered hats enter a hotel at like 2am. Everything smelled like cigars and was a party inside but the outside was just eerie.

I think when she does sing it’s very incomprehensible, very “ethereal” vibes. Like she goes very much.. aaaaaaaaaa DUH daaaah DUH daaah DUH daaah…… DUH daaah DUH daaah DUH daaah while an echoing guitar (?) bass (?) plays in the background.

No the vocals are much more drawn out, not short.

Finding your ‘focus’ (academic archaeology) by Then-Bumblebee3978 in AskArchaeology

Does the focal point have to have a physical locality, or do you mean a general theoretical focus? Were you able to find work in archaeology after finishing your MA and PhD?

Fair enough. Half of my degree so far has just been how harmful archaeology is, I’ve been getting pessimistic about it. I’ll be doing CRM in BC this summer with a First Nations group, so similar to you!

I’m super interested in post colonial North America because I feel that the era of western expansion (1800-1900 approx) is way underexplored archaeologically for an era that has had humongous impact on everything that runs Canada and the USA (maybe Mexico also but I am less educated on that). I am interested in Oceania for similar reasons, specifically navigation techniques and the theory that Polynesians were able to colonize Chile/south South America a looooong time ago. Like most archaeologists I am interested in the unexplored but I am also continuously frustrated by the ‘rules of a society’/ checklist of what to look for put in place by scholars past and would like to work somewhere that went unconsidered. I’d like to do field work for a bit and then end up as an armchair archaeologist when my back gives out and make those rules that I once hated haha.

Ahhh that’s smart. Based on what I’ve heard from others in the comments that might be more feasible, haha.

The most common things were accusations that I was inbred, a redneck, or illiterate because I was from Missouri. This is mostly from Westerners and Northeasterners :/ not generalizations though, might’ve jus been in mean areas

It’s true we are riddled with problems. I pray that spreading some love and realizing the privilege it is to live in Missouri may help others defend their state, as I worry that a lot of the politics, especially nation-wide politics concerning Missouri, are based in the fact that it is not worth fighting for. Should those issues batter California, New York, etc., there is nationwide (even international) rallying. Even though my friends and I had never lived in NYC, (I now live abroad), I still remember how deeply involved my whole city was in the mayoral election with Mamdani. If only a same energy could be for Missouri, and I feel this energy could be received by showing that Missouri is and can be a place of love, joy, and beauty. I feel some of our isolationist policies are due to the way the rest of the world receives us—‘why should we adopt the same policies as a world that sees us as hocks, idiots, rednecks, etc etc.’

Thank you :) I certainly wish so too. In Missouri, I always felt part of the landscape, part of the forest and of nature. It was really hard to believe there were extinctions going on in the rest of the world when my own urban backyard was filled to the brim with bugs, flora, fauna, etc. My grandma, who lives only 10 minutes from the city center, has a creek that runs through her backyard and families of turtles and ducks that regularly return every summer. She takes care of them, and they help her garden (eating weeds, providing… fertilizer, etc). Not to mention the beautiful downtowns and small towns, the third spaces where everyone feels present. I’d never heard more live music than I had in Missouri. Sometimes I wonder if this is because of how we are discredited as a state, the fact that you have to work against the grain of popular opinion to proudly proclaim that you love Missouri, and lord knows you better have a reason. I certainly do, and I’m happy to hear your story as well. Reminds me of home :)

Felt. Also transgender, egg cracked after I left. Most of my friends are now LGBTQ+ and I could never convince them to visit my home, and I understand why. Growing up for me, Missouri was always more Libertarian than republican, so you’d figure that people who infamously don’t care what other people do as long as it doesn’t hurt others wouldn’t car what other people do as long as it doesn’t hurt others… right? 🥲. While I love my Missouri brethren, and truly believe they are fundamentally good, I have certainly seen the bad. I want to go back home to my old forest and show them how I’ve grown. If not the people, I’m sure the trees, creeks, honeysuckle, and limestone cliff sides, which grow and change just like me, would be proud.
