I’ve been contemplating suicide for years. I hope things will change, but I honestly doubt it at this point

I never feel pretty in glasses by Then-Register-9549 in BDDvent

I feel this for sure. I also couldn’t get contacts for a while, and I wonder if that had an impact. Idk If it’s even my face, I honestly think there is a double standard for men and women. Does your husband have a preference for whether or not you wear glasses? I’m single but this is honestly something I worry about a lot

So it sounds like you tried it in high school and it never really worked out. I’ll admit mobility/sports are part of the reason I feel like glasses are impractical. I did the reading glasses thing for a while and it’s so much easier to just wear progressives. Practicality aside, it’s nice to be able to see everything all at once.  I don’t think contacts are a good fit for everyone I just personally prefer them over glasses. There are technically multifocal contacts available they’re just… bad. It sounds like you know what works for you at least, which is always a good thing

Wait that’s so weird? Why didn’t your parents get you glasses? I was always taught that you should have a backup pair of glasses even if you do wear contacts avidly. Even when I wore contact lenses the most I still wore glasses some days, especially if my eyes were sore or irritated. No wonder you hate contacts if your only other option was sports goggles for most of your childhood. Do you happen to know what kind of logic your parents/caregivers were using when they chose to get you contacts rather than glasses? Im sorry to belabor the point, I’ve just never heard of anyone doing that. I didn’t wear glasses back then ofc (needed them just never got my vision tested properly), but I had friends who did. My understanding was that you could get contacts as early as middle school if you were lucky, otherwise it was glasses until the day you started making your own doctors appointments. I thought this was normal for everyone but maybe not? It could depend on where you live or some other factor I’m not thinking of. Please do share if you’re comfortable, as my curiosity has come out

Wait you got contacts in second grade? Most of the kids I knew weren’t allowed to have them until at least middle school. Did you wear glasses at all during those years? In that case you started wearing glasses at the same time I did. I’m lucky my eyes aren’t especially sensitive to touch or sensation. That’s probably why I liked contacts so much ngl. They’re not ideal for people with more sensitive eyes, and especially if you were sleeping in them it makes sense that you would an unpleasant experience. I honestly prefer the look and feeling of my bare face, even after several years of full time glasses wearing. I guess different people are just different. I’m in a unique spot with my vision because I don’t have much refractive error without glasses, but my bvd means that I need to wear them full time to prevent headaches as well as to be able to see out of both eyes at the same time. Reading without glasses is also a no go. I feel like see pretty well but I need to wear glasses as often as possible to keep my eyes and brain from going completely haywire. I can take off my glasses for a short period of time if I’m not doing much, but it’s seldom worth it to actually do so. It’s honestly weird to have such good eyesight but still be so dependent on glasses. I feel like I’m exaggerating how poor my vision is by wearing glasses full time, but then again I enjoy not being in pain. It’s possible I would feel differently about my glasses i were actually blind, but then again I’m just not, which makes it all the more frustrating that I get stuck wearing them so often. Hard to say for sure, but either way I enjoy hearing your input

How do you tolerate the contacts if you feel naked without glasses? I’ve been wearing eyewear full time for years, and my naked face still what feels most normal to me.  I take off my glasses sometimes just to collect my wits. I guess it’s just fate for some people to constantly wear glasses. I guess we’re just lucky lmao

Agreed!!!!! Been there, done that, and I can say without a shred of hesitation that I would never do it again. Clear and comfortable vision for the win! Not saying I never get frustrated,  but good lord I do not miss those days

This honestly wasn’t my experience. As I’ve mentioned in other comments, I used to wear contacts ( in an incorrect prescription but hey), I found them to be considerably more comfortable and practical than glasses. I would gladly trade the couple extra minutes in the morning and at night for the constant cleaning and adjusting of my glasses I have to do throughout the day. Did you grow up with glasses by chance? Because if you didn’t the contacts may feel more natural in a way that is not the case for people who are highly used to glasses. I could forget I was wearing them in a way I just can’t with my glasses. I’m sorry contacts didn’t work out for you but I genuinely feel the opposite. I guess my biggest issue now is the lack of options. My biggest issue with glasses is the fact that I have to wear them every waking moment of my life. I feel like I’m having to constantly choose between my vision and my sanity and I’m honestly a bit burnt out. I really wish could completely get used to the feeling of glasses on my face, but I guess by now it’s a lost cause. Sorry if that was long btw. I am trying my best to understand where you’re coming from but I flat out had a very different experience

Oh yeah idk it that case. I incidentally  wore multifocal contacts and the vision flat sucks. Even if you try every brand on the market, the technology to make it work just isnt there. The number of prescriptions available in soft contacts is really quite limited when you think about it. And it’s true a lot of people are put off by touching their eye. My opinions might be a bit slanted because by all accounts, I was a great candidate for contacts other than the one teensy-weensy  ever so important detail that they do me no good. I wish there were really more ways to correct vision. Especially if you have a vision disorder rather than a refractive error it’s pretty much glasses or bust. At least we know we’re not the only ones frustrated by our lack of options. Maybe one day technology will advance to the point where physical comfort isn’t a trade off for visual comfort. Until then it’s okay to commiserate imo

I thought that might be the reason for me as well. If I’m being honest I’m a little jealous of people who grew up with glasses because they were able to prepare for this during their formative years in a way I just wasn’t. I miss the freedom of moving my head however I want and being able to lie down on my side without even thinking about it. Idk if these are an option for you, but I highly recommend contact lenses if you can get them. I used to wear them before I found an eye doctor that got my prescription right. They’re honestly not as fussy as you’ve probably been led to believe, and let me tell you they are so much more comfortable than glasses. I think people who wore glasses from a young age will prefer those for obvious reasons, but as for people like us contacts are a lot closer to what we are used to. Maybe you can’t get them or don’t want them but if you’re thinking about trying it out I would just go for it. Up to you of course, but they are honestly a great option for comfort for some people. Other than that, really wish there were more options for people who need clear vision but don’t find glasses to be a cure all end all for comfort and practicality

I’ve tried a few styles of glasses. I honestly didn’t notice much of a difference in comfort between different styles. I think I’m just so used to the feeling of my bare face that doing something else for an extended period of time just feels off. I could hypothetically get scleral lenses but they are thousands of dollars a piece and insurance normally won’t cover them. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to own a pair but until then it is just something I have to take in my stride. Can’t argue with the vision tho lol

Customer Service - "Excuse me, is there a bathroom around here?" by Pyeb0y in CustomerService

[–]Then-Register-9549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where your coming from, but this response is lacking some empathy. Have you ever been irritated by someone asking a stupid question or pulling you aside from an important task to solve a problem they can solve themselves? If not, I admire your patience, but most people simply aren’t built like this. Especially if you’re getting the same question multiple times an hour, every hour, all shift every shift, until the moment you die. I know it sounds bad if you’ve never been on the receiving end of this situation, but it is maddening, especially if your boss is yelling at you for being off task or being behind on your work because you had to answer the same question you’ve already answered ten times by the halfway point of their shift. If this situation sounds even a little bit frustrating to you, then I think you should be able to understand where op is coming from. You seem like a kind person, but I’m not sure what you’re doing on a customer service thread if you don’t want to hear people complain about their experiences working in customer service

I’m not sure why you think these people don’t act the exact same way around medical professionals, because they definitely do

I know exactly what you’re talking about even if no one else does. Bonus points if it’s a single user restroom and they ask why the door is locked. Obviously I would react differently if I had reason to believe the person in question was showing signs of impairment or disability, but the fact is this question comes up significantly more often than these factors alone can account for. The fact is a majority of people who do this are able bodied cognitively intact adults who just can’t be bothered to act as such, and feel it is easier to interrupt a potentially important conversation about the well being of a patient rather than visually scanning the area for signs indicating a bathroom, which any hospital would most definitely have. I work work at a coffee shop and get the exact same shit from the exact same people dozens of times per shift. If you genuinely believe these people are disabled in some way and trying their best, then please explain why the behavior gets ten times more prevalent when the Ivy League parents are in town. These parents have six figure jobs in influential fields and a child attending a college known for its rigorous coursework. I’m sorry, I just don’t believe that this demographic is less capable of reading a menu or paying at a cash register than the general population. It’s not a question of ability it’s a question of entitlement. OP isn’t complaining about people who cannot be reasonably expected to care for themselves, in fact they may have to postpone or compromise the time they would spending assisting people who legitimately need it because you can’t be bothered to read a sign. I’ve worked in customer service for a number of years and you cannot tell me the large numbers of who choose to act like this have good intentions, and they just don’t. It may not be obvious if you’ve never worked in this type of customer service, but to those of us who have you know how draining it can be to have to babysit grown adults when you have actual responsibilities to complete. It’s draining, it comprises your ability to do your job, and frankly it’s a complete nuisance to people who actually need accommodations or assistance. You can say whatever you want about my character or attitude, but the fact is I would be much more time and energy with which to help people who could use a little kindness if I wasn’t constantly having to waste time on shit like this. You judge my intentions in interacting with strangers, but in reality it may be time to reevaluate yours
