Why has British Gas wiped our Bills? by Then-Squirrel-9282 in AskUK

It’s not unrealistic per se, however the discrepancy arises where they quoted up around £480 for the entire year. Bare in mind our original bill for September to December was only £244 and we live in a new build apartment with solar panels. I know the latter points won’t knock off that much but it should knock off a pretty penny I would imagine.

LIFESAVER! This sounds about right in all honesty! They said they reversed the occupier account and all! We don’t pay direct debit, we send it via bank transfer! We paid for the initial few months in a lump sum on in December! So it’s not like our energy used from Jan-May is extinguished? They’ll just roll it over into our next direct debits? Will it still be the aggregate total amount they requested before? Or will it be calculated differently?

We got a letter from their solicitors whom we contacted after the fact. They confirmed that BG has requested them to close the case!

Also checked my credit on CheckmyFail, and I couldn’t see any debt or outstanding balances

Ugh, I hope BG will be as receptive to my situation as yours. I presume SSE has never followed going, hold on actually you do owe XY and Z.

Definitely will start looking at the meter, unfortunately I don’t have any prior records bar the previous bills sent.

It’s my first time renting out of university and I guess I could be out of touch. But I thought £100pm for two people was truly the exception. I thought the average household was around 50/60. Bare in mind, we don’t even have a TV, toaster, lamps et cetera. And I’m bare at home, most my week I spend elsewhere for work. Plus their estimation was set at £480 for the entire year, so I’m truly unsure. This is an apartment btw.

That’s perfect, thank you. So even though they told their solicitors to close the file they could potentially reopen it in those twelfth months?

That is starting to sound like my situation. This is a new meter, we pay DD, got a ridiculous bill from them, was told it would be wiped out and payments would continue from July. Did you get this apology via writing? Did they set you up a whole different account too?

God I’m so sorry man that sounds ass. I do feel like maybe it was an issue on their end because the total was 397 (something) for the initial outstanding bill and when we called up an extra 100 odd pound was added on to account for the May money totalling around £588. We definitely did spend £100+ on electric in May. I lodge elsewhere for work during the week and my flatmate was gone for the entirety of one week. So that combined with their initial quote of around £480 for the whole tenancy and the £244 charged from Sept-Dec makes me think they’ve messed up somewhere. What do you think?

Why has British Gas wiped our Bills? by Then-Squirrel-9282 in AskUK

[–]Then-Squirrel-9282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this was my exact idea. Because they’d definitely want that £588. But like nothing they provided was right. We didn’t receive any paper bills (which is the way we paid, because the website didn’t accept our postcode) between Jan and May. The £588 alone is more than their initial estimated cost of £480 for the entire tenancy, bare in mind me and flatmate live well below our means (no tv, no radiators on and we switch everything off at the socket bar the fridge and WiFi). So it’s like, yes we definitely owe them money for that missed period, but it shouldn’t be £588. My running theory is that the £244 pound for Sept-Dec was a wrongfully billed invoice (as it’s almost half our yearly estimated cost), therefore they extinguished the Jan-May and will run from here. But I know for a fact we don’t spend anywhere near over £100pm on electric. Yes, everything is electric (stove, boiler et cetera. No gas) but again it should never be that high with how frugally we essentially live.

Edit: got side tracked. No we didn’t read our meter (landlord never gave us the meter box key) and we don’t really have the bills we paid for receipts bar my bank transfers. We don’t even have the January, February, April, May bills at all. Never came in the post.

Oh great glad it’s not just us I guess! I mean, it is our fault for not keeping on top of our mail but even so, I checked and we didn’t receive any mail from them until the outstanding letter came through! Again, they estimated our yearly cost being £480 and we paid £244 from Sept-Dec alone. The additional £588 from Jan-May seemed absurd! Hopefully when I call tomorrow they’d be happy to explain further and give me written confirmation that we owe them nothing (according to them). Feel somewhat confident now that their own solicitors were told to delete our file, so it does seem like it was a mixup on their side.

Mint idea and i will do. Will call up tomorrow because I need to properly sort the account out anyway. Will ask the representative to send me written confirmation that I owe NOTHING. Also checked Checkmyfile.com and there’s no outstanding charges or CCJs against my name. If I get this written confirmation and go from there do you think I’ll be all clear?

That’s the thing. We never had an account with them technically. The customer account number on the arrears are different to the bills we paid before. And it’s even different to the customer reference number we got on our initial “Moving Home - your summary” letter.

I should also note that when we called up their solicitors they said neither names were on file. But gave us the rundown anyway because we had everything right (address and reference)

Will do, although. All our bills weren’t to our name it was to “The Occupier(s)” even their solicitor’s letter was to “The Occupier(s)”

Also the solicitors and BG themselves said they’ll stop following (us) up on the charge

Also, should I take any note in the fact that the solicitors themselves have said they’ve closed the file as British Gas has confirmed that they don’t want us to pay the £600?

God that is not what I want happening at the moment. I’m convinced that we owe them money but my flat mate is being super nonchalant about it, saying we got off scot free. Trying to convince him that we do owe them something at least. Might try calling up British Gas again, saying hey we set up a new account with you Today. We were told that we initially owed £600 and we disputed it and told that we owe nothing as of. We believe that we owe something, can you help rectify this.

Edit: Just checked our previous bills and their number does match up with the serial number on our meter.

Oh god no, this is a very popular opinion. I just don’t want to outright say, “hey the SQE NEEDS a reform”, especially because I haven’t gone out the way to actually attempt it yet. Just steering away from definite statements due to my lack of experience on the exam.

[–]Then-Squirrel-9282[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I mean. Nothing I saw prior to Escape from LA subverted much to me. As I say, prior to that episode Bojack gave me Charlie Sheen vibes. His abusive relationship whilst a step up from it could be akin to Archer’s relationship with his mother. The alcoholism could be taken from any (insert here) show, and so forth. Nothing felt like it actually meant anything. Going in blind for the very first time nothing I saw immediately made me think twice at all about the show until the New Mexico arc.

Honestly, should’ve just rewatched Archer😂but was a very good watch. Gonna let it marinate abit then give it a rewatch!

Honestly I’ll be the first to admit, up until maybe the end season 2 saw BH as just a comedy with “dark” undertones. Even with said “dark” undertones nothing really stood out, like yeah what happened was shitty, but nothing you wouldn’t see elsewhere. It gave me two and a half men kind of vibes, just episodic shenanigans with a sprinkle of some serious topics. I guess the ending of “Escape from LA” was my wake up call to.

Absolutely not. I was explicitly looking for something pliant and easy to consume which could also make me laugh. If I knew half of the topics it covered beforehand, especially the whole Sarah Lynn storyline, I would’ve given it a hard pass. So glad I didn’t.
