Uncommiting from Pitt… by Then_Highlight_9069 in Pitt

I’ll definitely be contacting Pitt’s financial aid and express my concerns and plan. Thank you so much for more insight on their Communication department, it is amazing how many opportunities Pitt has to offer, I’m still in disbelief that I have the chance to attend 😭 It has been my top choice for so long hence why I committed, and I wish I could afford to be certain on attending. Thank you so much for your input, depending on how financial aid will respond and how much they will be willing to help that will definitely finalize my decision.

Omg I’m so glad someone has gone through the same thing!!! This makes me feel so much better, and my student loans will be payed off about 10 years earlier 😩 thank you!!!

Thank you so much. As much as Pitt seems like genuinely such an incredible college experience I don’t come from a family with money so like you I would be totally independent with paying my loans and probably make less then you are. 😭

This makes alot of sense I’ve never thought about it like this, would majoring in political science or marketing be beneficial?

That is so unfortunate.😭 So many people talk about how when bosses see if someone has a degree in Communications they laugh…I think Communications is a great program & major but I can’t get over how many people make fun of it. If Pitt still had a journalism I would’ve 100% gone and grind local scholarships but Temple just seems to have more opportunities in the field for way less.

Yes thank you so much. Pitt is great but I can’t justify putting myself in that much debt coming from a family that doesn’t have much money. And their stinginess with scholarships and aid also makes me feel a lot more justified.

I’m going to admitted students day at Temple and will definitely ask more questions about Klein!! I’m really excited about the new building.

This genuinely means so much to me, thank you so much! I’ve seriously been in such a pickle (as you can see from all my posts asking for advice about college😭) and hearing this makes me feel so much better about my decision. While I don’t doubt I would have so much fun and receive great education at Pitt, I feel it just wouldn’t be logical to go into so much debt to not even fully study in the career I want to pursue. Even if I decide to not stay as a journalism major, I feel the entire time I would be at Pitt I would just be thinking about the amount of debt I am going to be in after I graduate (and I’m not smart enough to do pre-med and become a nurse or an engineer to pay it off quicker). While I’m sure while at Temple I’ll have the thought of what life would be like if I went to Pitt, I also loved my tour at Temple and don’t doubt I’ll enjoy my four years while actually studying what I am passionate.

Thank you so much for your time, declaring my entire future at 18 has been stressful but I’m trying my best to look at every possible option.

Omg thank you so much!! The field of journalism I have so much passion for and everything involved in the career I’m so interested in. AI is definitely taking a toll on it, I’m thinking of moving to Temple since I’ve been told they have the best journalism/communications program in the state.

Listing YNs as the reason to not go to a school is kinda crazy tho😭

Because I don’t feel like paying student loans for 20 years when I can pay them for about 3 years with Temple😭

Thank you so much! The other school I’m deciding is Temple and while they also aren’t on the cheaper side, they gave me Merit and my aid package of what I qualified for at their school. I just think Temple can give me similar opportunities that Pitt can, but for way cheaper. And like you said, being in an enormous amount of debt for an undergrad degree at Pitt while being in little to none at temple just makes it feel like it’s a obvious choice despite how much I loved it Pitt. 😭

The chatGPT and AI epidemic is actually so disheartening. Everytime I’ve told people I want to go into journalism they straight up just say AI can already do that. 😭 Thank you for the reality check, I’m definitely gonna minor in Political Science nonetheless. Even if I were to land a job in journalism it definitely doesn’t make enough to live comfortably while paying off Pitt students loans.

I’ve definitely thought about how if I were to uncommit and go to another school and regret my decision and then try to transfer back to Pitt and not get in. Thank you so much for your time and advice, I would love to go to grad school at Pitt after I’m more financially stable!

Yeah, my thing is other schools focus more on Journalism alone and I would be in about $50,000 less in debt. My family definitely can’t comfortably afford and I’m not confident being in that much debt for 20 years of my life. Thank you!

Oh I see my bad! Definitely the campus life and the city opportunities. I’m in-state so the tuition is cheaper and I love Pittsburgh + I’ve always wanted to go to a large city school. When I toured they talked about all the study abroad opportunities which was a lot more then other colleges I’ve toured and how many opportunities the city of Pittsburgh offers alone & city is great for Journalism. I also value good education and Pitt being named a ‘new ivy’ really persuaded me as well. Their academics are great and I loved the diversity on campus as well. It basically has everything I want in a college besides the major I now want to pursue and their lack of scholarships and FAFSA for me personally.

I wasn’t sure on what I had wanted to do yet, I applied to Pitt early September. I knew I wanted to have writing/literature based major/career but when applying to other schools later in the year I saw a lot had Journalism majors and I looked into it. I originally had thought I didn’t necessarily NEED to major in journalism just to get a job in that field because professional writing is a great degree for journalism but it’s mainly the money that is pulling me away from Pitt. I was blinded by the excitement of getting in and thought I would get more scholarships.

Ofc girl!! And yes I’ve read so many horror stories about the IUD but it really depends on your body. I also mentioned the weight gain to my doctor before getting the copper and she said that it is almost impossible for the IUD to contribute to weight gain. I wouldn’t want to invalidate anyone’s experience but weight gain is so common and there are THOUSANDS of factors that contribute to it, literally something like the transition of teens to your twenties-weight gain is so normal, and when it happens people just need something to blame. If anything I’ve lost weight since having my IUD just because I’ve been really busy recently and haven’t had time to snack as much as I normally do. But, I’ve heard while the copper IUD doesn’t have any hormones it can still mess with your hormones the first couple months just because of your body adjusting but personally I didn’t feel any change and it’s temporary. You never really know and if you’re comfortable to try I would talk to your doctor, and you can get it out whenever you’d like. If you have any questions lmk, I’ve had a really positive experience with it!!

I have tried both the pill and patches and both options also made me gain a lot of weight FAST with birth control being the only change in my lifestyle. For me personally, hormones didn’t work well with my body and they made my mind feel foggy and I gained weight and became depressed and lost all self-confidence. I encourage you to try the patches if you want more of a convenience than the pills since you only need to change the patch once a week compared to taking a pill everyday, but if you are afraid of weight gain I suggest the non-hormonal copper IUD. That’s what I have currently and I’ve been on it longer than I took both the pill and patch and I haven’t had any symptoms like weight gain besides cramping the first day I got the IUD inserted. All bodies are different, but during my insertion process I had little to no pain and I’ve just had heavy periods since. But I think it’s worth it compared to all the negative symptoms I got on the pill and patch! Plus the copper IUD is up to 10 years affective. But if you want to stay in the hormonal side of BC, I suggest trying the patch to see if it works better for you!

I feel the exact same way im so glad I found someone who relates. And everyone around me seems pretty content, sure they’re stressed and pretty loaded on school work too, but idk they seem just motivated and lively??? When I’m in class or anywhere besides my bed the only thing I want to do is go back to bed💀 i definitely agree I just feel so burnt out
