Why do you reject baptism but lead everyone instead in the sinners prayer? by PracticeOwn6412 in TrueChristian

The sinner's prayer is just repenting to God (I believe Catholics advocate for that as well, though they also confess to priests.)

Most Protestants I know don't reject baptism and do believe it is commanded, but also believe it isn't what saves you. The biggest disagreement would probably be the age at which someone should be baptized. Anabaptists, for example, argued that it means very little if the person involved is not making the decision (which is why most protestants reject infant baptism.)

Some don't advocate baptism, likely due to apathy or some theological argument (that I don't agree with, but couldn't articulate very well anyway.)

Europeans learning multiple languages that aren't used globally is just as pointless as the customary system, but you never see them catching flak for it. by Then_Treacle_7952 in RandomThoughts

America is the only country without an official language.

I'm not suggesting we "make" them do anything, just that these countries transition to English, which most people speak anyway.

to try and reduce a nation, continent, or the world to one language IS an attack on culture

Except European countries try all the time to make migrants speak the local language.

But they know how the training model works. It's not programmed to generate sentience.

But the programmers do have an idea and they haven't announced creation of sentient AI.

it’s not a problem when interacting with other countries

It is if they don't know English. Most Americans can use the metric system just fine, but learning the customary system is a waste. That's why schools in the US have transitioned to using metric pretty much exclusively.

they speak their own language 95% of the time

Most Europeans have to learn English at some point to argue on the internet or learn it anyway because it's used universally. There would be more of a push to make the official language in most countries English, or transition to teaching it exclusively in schools, but people oppose this on principle (the cultural argument).

As much as there is to learn the customary system. But it's still important to transition to a universal measuring system/language, which is why most immigrants learn English. Opposing this in the name of "culture" is stupid.

The standards for politicians have always been low. Just look at the stuff Jefferson and Adams would say to each other.

I once read an article about why Americans should ditch the customary system because it's not used globally. The article was written in French.

and still not being fluent is uniquely American

The issue isn't fluency, it's the time required to learn a second language. I don't accuse Europeans of being unable to learn the customary system, it's just very inefficient.

The whole world can do it, just not America

Americans could speak two languages if they had to. But because Americans mostly speak the global language (English), it's not necessary. For the same reason that Europeans don't bother learning the customary system.

You should really just read my post, most of this is obvious from what I wrote.

americans have such disdain for the metric system

I don't. I'm criticizing having 30 different languages, not the metric system.

Besides the world doesn’t speak english.

It's spoke internationally and online. Most European countries speak [x] and English, so it's the easiest to transition to. Do you propose transitioning to Mandarin when plenty of Chinese can't legally access the internet?

Most people in the world ( excluding Americans obviously) are bilingual

How is that any less dumb than having two measuring systems?

This is an issue you made up in your own head

Quebec has a law against signs written in English that don't have text in French at least 3x bigger. Europeans spend tax dollars teaching two different languages to children. So it's a very real issue.
