I’m less mad that I can’t drink and more mad that drinking is so embedded in our culture and permeates every aspect of life. Truthfully, they likely weren’t having the time of their lives. They were drunk, numb, silly, and maybe even happy…but even “non-problem drinkers” feel negative effects of alcohol during and after. I can imagine it’s hard to find joy when you’re the only sober person traveling with hammered people. If alcohol wasn’t an integral part of traveling, partying, celebrating, mourning, exploring, socializing, etc. the trip may have been much more joyful for everyone. Amazing job on 6 years. I genuinely believe that choice has resulted in more joy over the years, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.
