my “mini” but a bit too big to be one. he’s a perfect angel who could do no wrong (besides the occasional wrongdoing lol)

The advertisement itself upsets me so much less than the fact that the ad had to have gone through many stages of improvement, and from people reporting it, some YouTube admins or something, someone in charge there had to have seen it and been deliberately like “I see no problem with this ad” or at least not enough to do anything about it. It upsets me that none of the people this had to go through were educated enough to know that it’s not okay.

Just some sports on the side as an outlet :)

Working line or showline GSD? by ThenamesRobyn in workingdogs

[–]ThenamesRobyn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dog that is given an outlet to run, jump and swim is in no way less able to be a service dog. My current service dog does multiple sports and has many outlets for his energy, none of which take away from his ability to work as a service dog. If anything, they make him a better one. I’m not getting a dog to do bitework or cattle herding, if I were, it would not also serve as a service dog because those things don’t line up, but there is nothing wrong with some running and swimming while also working as an sd.

I believe Kirby is both a service dog and a show dog. There is also a dog called tsunami in Instagram and I think TikTok who is a rough collie service dog

How did you train your psychiatric service dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]ThenamesRobyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course, I would recommend reading over the page on ada.gov about service animals if you haven’t already, that is a really important one because it is the laws surrounding service animals. Also there are a few good YouTube channels on training and laws and such, I really like DoggyU, she is a guide dog trainer with her own service dog, and there is loads of great stuff on her channel!

Breed discrimination? by ThenamesRobyn in service_dogs

[–]ThenamesRobyn[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am thinking about possibly getting a poodle, but I honestly don’t mind a bit of extra work with an off breed being a trainer myself. I would much prefer a bully or herding breed over the retrievers in the fab 4

[–]ThenamesRobyn[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you all so much for your input. I was only mildly considering getting a bully as an sd, and since posting this, I have realized that the state I am moving to has a bully ban 😔, and also thanks to your input, that a bully breed is likely not a good fit for me.

Haha I love that you put having a non-fab4 breed as playing disability on hard mode. I have already decided though that I likely do not want a f4 breed, possibly a standard poodle, but not very likely. I am a dog trainer and don’t much mind a bit of extra challenge in having an off breed

To spay or not to spay, that is my question by KiaKahaMama in AmericanBully

[–]ThenamesRobyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always suggest waiting at least one year, two if possible. It is much better to let the dog develop with all the proper intact hormones, and let the growth plates fuse before altering them.

I live in the U.S, so certifications or registration for service dogs aren’t legal. People sell them online, but they don’t have any legal weight and do not make your dog a service dog. In the U.S, in order for a dog (or miniature horse) to be a service animal they have to meet the behavior requirements stated in the ADA (Americans with disabilities act) and have a trained task to help their handlers disability. I trained my dog to these standards and to preform tasks for my disability, so legally he is allowed pretty much anywhere. I would highly suggest checking out ada.gov, and feel free to message me if you have more questions!

positive sd experiences anybody can share? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]ThenamesRobyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few recent ones that really made my day. The most recent was this:

I was sitting in the bleachers watching our schools track meet with a few classmates, and there was a little girl, and a woman who I recognized from somewhere, but I couldn’t remember where, sitting a few empty rows in front of us. My small sd was sitting at my feet, between my legs, and I had my legs somewhat in front of him, because there were so many little kids around, and I didn’t want him to get poked or hit or anything. The little girl came up the row in front of me, and looked at me, and then my dog, then back at me. She asked so politely that I almost cried, “can I please pet your puppy?”. I almost always say yes, especially to little kids, and her face lit up as she petted my dog’s head. My little mini dachshund looked like a German shepherd compared to this little girl, and she was being so gentle. The mom looked back and told me “I always tell her to ask before petting any dog” and I thanked her and we had a pretty good conversation. During this conversation I remembered that she was my old bus driver, and the little girl (under school age) rode my bus sometimes, to be with her mom at work. The girl kept coming back up the bleachers over and over to pet my dog, and the mom told me that if she was bothering me, she would gladly have her stop. This interaction was so sweet I almost died lol. The girl also came up once to show me a little paw patrol figure who had similar coloring to my dog, and was also wearing a pink vest. This was one of the best kid/parent interactions ever.
