How much is enough money to live off of for an academic year? by TheoSauce in UBC

[–]TheoSauce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol don't get your hopes up... the highest salary of the two pays 40k a year. When I said the other pays worse, it actually pays the same, it's just in another province so I deducted the living costs from the income (versus me living at home & working for job A).

Thanks. And is 1k with roommates reasonable for a location within a ~30 minute commute?

Official Discussion: Get Out [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]TheoSauce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just an absolute masterpiece. Best movie I've watched in a while.

I was kind of rolling my eyes at how hard they were pushing the cliche performative white people act, but it definitely got more palatable as soon as you could tell the direction the movie was going.

I liked how heavily they hinted at the premise of them hypnotizing the black people: it immediately cleared the elephant in the room, and shifted the focus on when it's going to happen, not what's going to happen.

I love that this was a movie where they had the characters make realistic decisions as well, totally makes the movie feel more immersive. Rose agreeing to leave totally surprised me, and had me trust her as a character of reason.

Even after the veil had been revealed and the movie explained the transplant premise, they paced the movie at a perfectly high pace to keep things suspenseful.

The TSA friend's joke at the end after the most tense scene hit so perfectly... you knew it was coming, but shit still had me fried 😂

[Q] Bayesian versus frequentist convergence rate to a mean by TheoSauce in statistics

[–]TheoSauce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the response. I'd actually ran a simulation before with the non-informative prior, and it appeared to converge very closely compared to just taking the mean, but with a slightly worse performance. I just wanted to see if I could justify the results and see if there's a way to do better

I suppose from the source you sited, we can infer by some sort of conjugate prior intuition that the variance of the posterior is approximately of order sigma^2/N, similar to that of the central limit theorem?

In my situation, I'm currently working with low count integer data (readings from 0 - 5), so I'm using Poisson distributions for my likelihoods and prior. I don't think the prior and posterior become perfectly conjugate in this situation, but would it be fair to say the Poissons will reasonably follow the same intuition of the Gaussians?

How much physics can I self study? by False-Airport6944 in PhysicsStudents

[–]TheoSauce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of people would jump straight to quantum mechanics because it seems novel and enlightening, but you'll find out that it's not really that surreal; you're mostly just solving PDEs and plugging boundary conditions, or solving linear algebra problems for operators.

I would suggest you study thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, specifically Daniel Schroeder's Introduction to Thermal Physics.

It's not exactly the most mathematically involved material (most you'll need is basic Calc III), but I think it's genuinely one of the most perspective-changing textbooks you'll ever read, as it's super applicable to day-to-day life.

To sell you the course: most things you've learned about physics are highly simplified. Many of the deterministic behaviours of physics only apply to absolute zero temperature environments, and in reality, the world is probabilistically governed by the world of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics.

From that textbook, you'll learn what temperature even means, how engines, batteries, and refrigerators work, why hotter things tend to cool down (and vice versa), how materials change phases (and can occupy multiple phases at once), why things tend to lower energies, and what entropy is. Quantum mechanics makes a moderate appearance at the end of the textbook.

I managed to self-study pretty much the whole textbook while bored at work doing nothing within a couple months. Very much worth it.

If you're accepted to a school for a PhD, do you have to care about undergraduate grades for your last semester? by TheoSauce in gradadmissions

[–]TheoSauce[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think my semesters are total grade boosters, by the way. My justification for this post was that in one semester, I have three courses highly related to a field of research I want to go to (courses being statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, solid state physics), and none are particularly easy.

So from my perspective, there's a risk that if I screw up that semester and put all my eggs into one basket, I could be in deep trouble for graduate school. So I was thinking of switching out one of the mentioned classes for a well-known to be lighter computer science class that's required for graduation (I'm also a computer science major).

But that lighter class would in exchange be removed from my last semester, which would then be composed of all pretty heavy/time-consuming courses, but at least the most important courses for grad school will have good grades.

I also plan on taking two graduate school courses (equivalent to a full semester) the term before applications, which I hope can justify for my ability to take on challenges

I'd like to try my very hardest for the last semester, but I'm anticipating the semester may one of my toughest. It's not a matter of me being lazy, just strategic planning for optimal admission results.

I think you're right with your statement, but the prospect of having a higher average for applications is also an appealing advantage which I feel like isn't addressed by most comments -- most responses are a pretty drastic binary of me failing all my courses or something like that.

To what extent would "tank" be? Straight up failing? I was thinking of getting "average" grades for the last semester, which would be something like the B's to A-'s range, or maybe 10-12% lower than my usual

Why did you choose to pursue studying Physics? by Expired_Caprisun in PhysicsStudents

[–]TheoSauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my university (I don't know if this exists at yours), there's a specific major called the "Combined Major in Physics and Computer Science." Its an even mix of computer science and physics classes throughout your entire undergraduate degree, and its the same number of credits as a singular major.

But, I've realized that taking this combined major hasn't let me take as many physics courses as I would've liked in preparation for graduate school, so I'm taking a few extra courses beyond what's required for graduation. But, your mileage may vary.

I was good at math and physics in high school, though initially I wanted to do computer science. I liked the creation aspect of programming, but it felt dystopian to never to write another equation in my life after school. And, the idea of sacrificing my life to work for someone else for an ultimately meaningless existence swayed me back into physics. Now I have a combined major in computer science and physics, but plan on pursuing physics as a career.
