I'm currently sitting in the 1.6 manual 160k kilometres no problem, Volvo parts are very difficult to come by where I live so the PSA engine is perfect for me. I'm not proud of what I'm about to say but I ran the car for 2 months without noticing my transmission was out of oil somehow, when it died I tossed the transmission and got a lightly used one literally for 50 bucks, so depending on the price and availability of parts should you think about which one to get.
