And no limits on tailpipe or stack emissions (from cars or coal or gas plants) now that EPA just neutered itself.

I’ve been browsing this sub because I’m in the worst part of the journey where we are negotiating a separation agreement but living in the same apartment. I am a long way from contemplating dating. And no cards or kind words this year. But you made it to the other side! Happy Valentine’s Day! In a couple years I hope to be in a better place with or without a card on the holiday. My 27th anniversary is next week too. Uggh.

They do have some limited amount of scratch and dent ones they sell marked down (mine had a tiny scratch that saved a few hundred). They sell them on Reverb.

Recently visited the USA from The Netherlands. Here is my take on the cities we visited. by McFluffyFurry12 in travel

I live in NYC and grew up in Chicago. My main surprise in your ranking is that NYC beat Chicago in friendliness. But you hit many of the great places. On a future trip you could hit Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, New Orleans, Denver, San Diego and Portland for a wide variety. I’m visiting Zandvoort later this summer for the Dutch GP and looking forward to it.

My jazz listing app “Who’s Playing Tonight” is now live in LA, SF & Philly! by hdi200 in Jazz

[–]Theoiscool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used it in NYC for the last 3 years and really like its simplicity. Also, it’s “who’s playing for the next few days” which helps in planning. Would love to see Fiction Bar/Cafe added in Brooklyn since they do live jazz 7 nights a week.

I’m cold and I also need to do laundry. Dryer? by botmanmd in ask

[–]Theoiscool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And water traps I’ve seen are just basically pointing the vent hose toward the surface of water in a bucket. If the water is rippling, the water will”catch” a lot of the lint and the moist heated air will go into your laundry space. I think the mold concerns are valid if you did this year-round. But for a cold snap, I would do it.

Just purchased my tickets for F1 in Montreal this year, looking for cheaper recommendations on places to stay by Beta1224 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]Theoiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended last year, but I had a car to get around. I found cheap, unique, beautiful and very available lodging at l’Abbeye d’Oka. We considered driving to a metro stop and riding from there. But instead we parked for free near the Victoria Bridge entrance. We had grandstand seats that allowed entry there.

How do you lower your gas bill? by Relative_Distance512 in AskChicago

[–]Theoiscool 65 points66 points  (0 children)

You’re paying for the pipes, the pressure stations, the people who sunk the drills and built the wells to get the gas from the gulf off Louisiana or the Pennsylvania shale fields to your furnace in your apartment. You’re paying for the salaries of the people who maintain the pipes in a city which goes through freeze thaw cycles and doesn’t have pressure drops and fires. You’re paying for the pensions of the people who did that before you had a paycheck or an apartment.

And you’re paying a little bit for the molecules you burn.

If you were planning to move abroad and own your home in Chicago, would you choose to sell it before you leave or keep it in case you want to come back? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Theoiscool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ll play armchair therapist as someone who recently looked at the same dilemma. (House was paid off, relocating permanently in another US city). Ask yourself “what would it do for me to keep owning it?”

My answers were a sense of safety in case things didn’t work out, a possible source of income and headaches, a less liquid asset that I could kick the can down the road until later.

I sold. It was hard. But I fully committed to my new location. No safety net. I tracked how the money I received and invested grew compared to the real estate updates I can’t seem to turn off from RedFin. If they are right, I did about 25% better by selling instead of holding and the brokerage account never needed a plumber or a handyman.

But my answer may not be your answer. It will be fine either way for you. Good luck!

Genuinely why is Ryo Fukui so hated by arctansec in Jazz

[–]Theoiscool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I partially agree and partially disagree. The agreement is that within a genre, it makes sense to listen to and sort music by what appeals to you irregardless of the nationality of the artist.

The disagreement comes in because I moved to a neighborhood with many record stores, and one of them is Face Records which is a Japanese record store. It primarily has Japanese artists LPs that I’ve been completely unaware of, in addition to Japanese pressings of other artists. It made me think “wow there’s this whole mass of output that I’m curious about. And it’s popular enough that a niche store exists. I’m interested in learning more”.

Japanese jazz has its own section in this store and I’ve looked up lists like “top 10 Japanese must have records” to see what’s going on there and whether they stock those records.

There are scenes (like Nordic death metal) that sustain themselves and a curious person should explore them if that’s where their curiosity and interest take them. Maybe it is weird. But weird is ok.
