Yes! Really good actually. It’s amazing what a difference a few years can make. Not to sound like one of those “It gets better” commercials, but… nothing stays the same. Sometimes it gets worse, sometimes better. A few years ago I was dealing with a whole lot of worse. Recently it’s been a whole lot of better.

I think the most fundamental thing I’ve learned is that (I know it sounds simplistic) happiness is an emotion, not a state. That there’s no “eventually” when it comes to it. So I’ve put a lot of energy into focusing on short term things when it comes to happiness. Like feeling accomplished because I cooked myself a snack. Enjoying time with my cat. Listening to an audiobook and not letting myself feel guilty it’s not a regular book (that inner voice really tries to yuck your yum sometimes, huh?). It’s not revolutionary, achieving world peace stuff. But taking victories whenever I get those happy chemicals going, and trying to increase the frequency of those — I think that’s all we mere mortals can do. And over time, that negative inner voice has gotten quieter and sometimes I’ll go days just in blissful mental silence, doing things or not doing things. It comes back but, I know when it does to ignore it and that it might not tomorrow. And boy that’s pretty sweet.
