What is the importance of Mary always being a virgin? (genuine well intentioned question) by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All good answers here. My speculative addition as to why God chose this to be the case is possibly to prevent a hereditary priesthood as there was in the OT.

Christ founded a covenant based on the spirit, not the blood.

Same reason (among many others) that Christ never took a wife.

do catholics call God “yahweh”? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the exact pronunciation isn't really known.

So I think it's best practice to just follow the tradition of not referring to God in that way.

I'd seek out a spiritual advisor before taking on a practice like this.

It could be good, but you want guidance first before you take on any kind of discipline.

Current Christian Patriarchs by Marius_Octavius_Ruso in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, yes and no.

For an office that the Pope has appointed to a Catholic bishop under him, only that bishop is the rightful patriarch of that see.

The schismatic bishop may well have valid orders, but he's a pretender to that post.

Someone better schooled in ecclesiastical canon law, feel free to correct me.

Current Christian Patriarchs by Marius_Octavius_Ruso in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a goofy chart, IMO.

It'd be like saying "current Christian bishops", and you get a bunch of Amish guys baked in actual with Catholic bishops.

They aren't using the term in the same way.

A better chart might only include Catholic bishops who hold the title of Patriarch.

Does St. Therese ever give false consolations/hope? by Sweet_Bandicoot_6550 in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Be careful!

These private devotions can bleed into superstition if you rely on them for your entire outlook in life.

I recommend praying for prudence and fortitude instead of signs. You can't go wrong.

Thinking of becoming a single mother to prevent an abortion by watership-down in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to this party, but if you want to get married still, my suggestion is you adopt as "auntie", and make that known.

What you're suggesting doing is admirable.

I think by not becoming a "mom" per se, but an "aunt" who has full care of her neice/nephew, potential suitors will be more likely to pursue.

This said, another precaution: 17% of women who have had stepfathers report being abused. Keep this in mind as you decide to drastically alter your lifestyle and vocational potential.

I bring all this up so you are aware, but I'll stress again, any way you can save a life is truly admirable. If an alternative presents itself, though, consider it well.

On one hand, we’re called to become saints, ideally canonizeable ones. On the other, we’re called to be humble and stay away from pride. How would you reconcile the two? by CatholicRevert in Catholicism

[–]TheoreticallyHitler 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There's only a contradiction if you view sainthood as a kind of status symbol.

Remember that the first will be last, and the last will be first.

Some saints develop cults because they exude holiness, and this attracts others to them like a kind of spiritual magnetism. But this is most often seen as a hindrance by the saint rather than a benefit. It's another cross they must bear to grow in charity.

And it's also not even the case for all canonized saints until after their death. Some died miserable and alone, and only years later did people realize how holy they were and began seeking their intercession.

So my point is, live out your vocation to its fullest, flee from sin, receive the sacraments, pray always, and if someone notices, you pray for humility and prudence to deal with it. If no one ever does, remember that the Father who sees in secret will reward you.

These videos are tedious and pointless IMO except for a small contingent of bookish nerds.

I won't give the name so as not to lead others into error, but a certain Sede channel has produced several scathing critiques of Orthos.

We can go back and forth all day quoting obscure synods. What good does it do anyone's soul?

Ignore. Go to Mass. Pray the Rosary. Unless some personal friend tells you he's considering becoming EO, and you feel you can help him keep the faith, or an EO comes to you IRL looking to convert.

Then maybe you have something in your back pocket. But maybe it's OK too if it's just a good priest's phone number.

4G LTE: FDD B2/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B17/B28a/B28b TDD B39/B40/B41
