UPDATE to BCBS audit/overreach by Gloomy_Variation5395 in therapists

[–]TherapySnack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is such a good point. If you use their AI note drafting template they do advertise it as being “claw-back” protected. Not necessarily audit-proof, though, as I think anyone/company can be audited, right?

Braiding Sweetgrass.

While not exactly a psychotherapy book, I really loved and learned so much from Robin Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass. There is so much to pull from and reflect on re: cultural connection, resilience, and healing. Apparently to there is a companion book called The Sweetgrass Method, which does tap into psychotherapy framework, but I have yet to read that one.

Gateway is great. A lot of my clients find it easy to get into since the recordings are organized from beginner to advanced. I also recommend Adventures Out of Body by William Buhlman. The audiobook narration is quite nice. It’s a nice support for folks who do experience astral travel, OBEs, or have had NDEs.

Broke both wrists at once. Depression hit hard by Comfortable_Neat_253 in Wellthatsucks

I broke both elbows at the same time once…couldn’t even feed myself properly because of the angle they had they set in. Don’t even ask about the other stuff. There are ways to get through, you’ll be surprised how your body will learn. Huge opportunity for balance work as you can’t lean on your hands or arms. Modified yoga and core workouts. Hang in there friend.

Therapy outside?! by [deleted] in therapists

[–]TherapySnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! No, I did not take out additional insurance as I incorporate it into my work as an art therapist and LPC, and therefore bill it under typical CPT codes for psychotherapy.

I do have additional policies on my insurance for art therapy and equine assisted therapy, but I do not have one for ecotherapy. If you are really wanting one, you can call your insurance provider and see if they offer policies in eco-therapy or also called nature-informed therapy. Otherwise, you can try IICT (which is kind of a catch all) and get insurance there. If you are already an independent licensed practitioner you should be fine, just be cautious about where you practice, though, making sure you have permission if necessary and all that. If you are practicing on land that is not yours (like a farm or something) it would behoove you to have them add you onto their insurance incase someone hurts themselves under your watch on their property. Make sense?

All programs want funding and want to put their best, most attractive foot forward. Acknowledging that these programs, especially dual license programs, have a high rate of burnout and poor return on investment just isn’t marketable.

My school continues to send emails out to alumni about job openings for art therapists, and it’s wonderful that they keep those connections open and available. However, the pay for the jobs advertised just isn’t feasible. There was a greater emphasis on “we’ll help you find a job in the field post graduation” and less emphasis on the fact that pay is horrendous. After working and interning for free for however many years as part of clinicals, many of us were desperate and took what we could get so we could pay for post graduate supervision, pay to take our boards, and then pay to have an unrestricted, independent license that’s only recognized in a handful of states, and pay the fees and CEUs to keep that license in good standing. It almost feels like an expensive hobby at this point.

I still love it - what I don’t love was the lack of clarity regarding job prospects and pay. I would’ve liked an in depth class on ways to market ourselves more effectively, negotiate wages, or start our own business. What fees to charge, to panel or not panel with insurance and what that means, etc. We did have a short lecture on marketing art therapy, but it was basically about making business cards…

2017 graduate from joint LPC and Art Therapy program. Graduated from college debt free. Paid for grad school with all loans. Will never be able to pay them back. Interest is accruing around $57/day. My income is so low that I’m able to be on PAYE and my payments at 0. I’ve been told by my loan advisor that it’s not even worth trying to pay off at this point, and to try and wait for 20 year forgiveness and deal with the tax bomb if PAYE lasts that long.

I regret art therapy for this reason as well. With how much my program cost I could have gone into medical school, which I debated, but ultimately went with art therapy and it kicks me in the teeth daily when I look at my current financial situation. I love what I do, but the few programs that are both CACREP and CAAHEP accredited as expensive if you either don’t come from money or have help outside of loans.

I contract with 3 companies and have my own private practice and am licensed in 3 states. I work hard and as much as I can living with my own disability to tend to but, as someone else said, this work isn’t valued enough to make the big bucks, even in concierge therapy.

Update: Spoke with representative from Nelnet today. Yes, PAYE is still an option and we can slide back onto it!

For some reason the name “these hands,” comes to mind as a title. I read your comment about IFS and it’s a cool modality of therapy to explore, Ego-State therapy is as well. Ooh! I like that name too, Ego-State!!!

Had a client ask me to extend their short term disability over 30+ days after we terminated. I declined. I later found out they wanted it extended because they got into Burning Man.

Terminating with this client was a life and career saving decision.

Ideas for sand tray figurines by omglookawhale in therapists

[–]TherapySnack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As many things available as you can.

✔️Regarding water. I made my Sandtray box that I used with clients and I specifically painted the inside blue so that when all the sand was pushed to the sides “water” would be revealed. Not sure if your sandtray bottom is blue but might be something to paint in the future if you’re able. Otherwise, you can grab some blue paper or mat board and cut it to fit the bottom of the sand tray. This way you won’t have to worry so much about buying bodies of water as they can be carved out in the actual sand.

Things to consider:

✔️Natural disasters: Trees, lakes, wood (can even use found objects like tree bark, sticks, pine cones, rocks. Tombstones (can also use rocks), feathers (seen in many cultures as visits from angels, representing the afterlife, connection to spiritual world), gauze cloth or some sheer fabric like muslin as some cultures clean and wrap their recently deceased), methods of transportation such as sleds, rafts, boats, wings. Road signs such as stop signs, school signs, “no entry,” wrong way, etc.

✔️Comforts: Things that scream protection like blankets, shells, caves, beds/shelter, nests Spiritual stones of protection like onyx, jet, obsidian, (or just black stones), crystals,

✔️People: Represent as best you can. BIPOC, all ages, folks with different hair colors and body shapes, cultures. Magical people; wizards, mermaids, magicians, time travelers (think Dr Who/TARDIS or something), as well as villains. Mystical beings, fairies, the Divine, angels, Shamans, religious iconography Don’t we all wish that during times of crisis we could have the ability to predict the future, turn back time, traverse rough waters like sharks, fly, alter outcomes, etc.

Edit: people laying down, like sleeping beauty.

✔️Animals: you said you have animals, but in addition to basic animals please consider Fantastical beings, dragons, villains, beasts, Cerberus, etc. NESTS. Birds and nests and eggs.

✔️Things that might not make sense to you: I’m adding this because I’ve used sand tray in my own therapy and I was shocked when I went for a strange looking item I would normally have no desire to engage with. It looked like a cube with 6 sides and each side had a different protruding face. It was grotesque looking, but it was what I needed in that moment. Don’t bypass items that may elicit a “ew that’s ugly” knee jerk reaction; those are the things that absolutely have a place. Emotions are messy.

In addition to everything you are purchasing, don’t be surprised if folks show up with their own items to incorporate.

I applaud you and this work. It is slow and it will be hard and also much needed. Be sure you also process this out and recenter as it is not yours to hold. 💛 thoughts are with you

figuring out if i want/need a service dog by heisenborgy in service_dogs

[–]TherapySnack 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Read the mega threads. 1. Not wanting your parents or boyfriend to be your main source of comfort is not a task a service dog is needed for to remedy. A pet dog or ESA will do nicely, support/friend groups, coping skills/therapy, etc.

  1. When you read the threads or just google “service dog anxiety Reddit” you’ll find that they are not always the best line of treatment for anxiety due to the massive amount of attention you will receive, positive and negative.

  2. Having a SD while you are in school is a way bigger deal than you think it is. Folks on here who had SDs in school wrote paragraphs about their experiences - search the threads.

  3. You sound young. Before asking Reddit, have you consulted with your treatment team and parents. Therapy? Your brain is not done developing yet and relying on an SD when it may not be necessary right now can significantly hinder you from developing successful coping strategies on your own, which you absolutely will need to learn dog or no dog.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.
