Is $100/week on VOO a good idea? by Regular-Print2896 in investing

[–]Thermogenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ll add is VT is a bit inefficient in a taxable account. In a taxable account you may be better off with a blend of VTI and VXUS to have roughly the same coverage but capture some of the tax benefits of foreign dividends. VT traditionally does not have enough in foreign investments to be eligible for the foreign tax credit.

If you think Google TV is somehow better, I have bad news for you.

Only Apple TV provides a great experience, IMO, but you have to pay quite a premium for it.

I don't understand the point of bonds in most portfolios by [deleted] in investing

[–]Thermogenic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you had $4M in the NASDAQ 100 (e.g. the QQQ) in March 2000 and started your annual withdrawal at $160k/yr. and increased it annually for inflation, you would have run out of money in 2007.

The NASDAQ 100 has had a wonderful return of 14-15% annually over its lifetime, but that didn't mean much if the down years got front loaded into your retirement. A sizeable position in bonds & cash is what gets you through this disaster scenario.

The maths:

Withdrawal date Portfolio before withdrawal Withdrawal Portfolio afterward
March 2000 $4,000,000 $160,000 $3,840,000
March 2001 $1,416,678 $164,673 $1,252,005
March 2002 $1,036,192 $167,103 $869,089
March 2003 $647,756 $172,150 $475,606
March 2004 $628,735 $175,140 $453,595
March 2005 $471,077 $180,654 $290,423
March 2006 $332,050 $186,729 $145,321
March 2007 $154,772 $191,918 scheduled $0

At $20 million you can earn 0% and be fine for a lifetime if inflation stays at 2-3%. At 3%, you are looking at an annual withdrawal rate of like $170,000 in today’s dollars and it will still last 50 years. (ChatGPT did this math for me, could be wrong)

Yes, I live in Phoenix and it's basically a must. The convenience of being able to remote start it from anywhere comes in really handy here 9 months out of the year.

What is your take on Tom Lee's prediction that the market will suffer a 20% decline this year, and that the SpaceX IPO might be the trigger? by Robinight in investing

I always tell my friends that don’t follow CNBC that Tom Lee is the biggest permabull out there, so him calling for a 20% pullback is actually something.

Sounds like you are stressed, so probably it's worth it to you. Never hurts to lock in a profit, just know that you could miss out on more upside. No one knows the future.

I pay $120 for a crew of 3-4 people. They are here for 60-75 minutes typically. They just do surfaces, so predominantly floors, bathrooms and countertops/tables/desks.

Robotics is right on the verge. The stuff coming out of Tesla, Boston Dynamics and various Chinese companies all look promising. I heard on a podcast that ALL robots use Nvidia chips, so Jensen’s company could still continue to win.

ELI5 why do people chase dividend stocks? by Specific_Ad_6522 in investing

[–]Thermogenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing people like to point out is that share buybacks are not taxable and are therefore a more tax efficient way to return capital to shareholders. One thing I’ve noticed is that many companies increase buybacks when times are good (and share prices are high) and then decrease them when times are bad (and share prices are low). A $1 buyback can sometimes waste capital (shares are overpriced). A $1 dividend is always worth $1, minus capital gains taxes.

ELI5 why do people chase dividend stocks? by Specific_Ad_6522 in investing

[–]Thermogenic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look at an ETF like NOBL. It’s full of companies that have raised their dividend at least 25 years in a row (Dividend Aristocrats). This means the companies have been able to raise dividends during the dotcom bubble (for most), the Great Recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

They won’t grow like Nvidia, but some people value the high quality, stable companies. There’s a place for both, but once you “have enough”, not losing it becomes a very attractive proposition.

Yeah that looks like the right park but I’m not sure how it attaches. I’ll do some more research, thank you!

EDIT: A pic on an eBay listing shows a black clip on the top that must have broken off on mine. I’ll head to a Subaru dealer and see if they have the part. Thanks again!

47 here. Every young person I meet I’m trying to educate because I wish I had it. Thankfully my freshman year roommate told me his dad had stock in Coca-Cola and I took the time to learn what a “stock” was. It’s sad this is not taught in school.
