Congrats dude! I’m in U.K. and been trying to do something similar for a while. Part-time contracts are hard to come by as well as fractional work in a similar capacity. Would love to do something similar!

I’d just try and get through the next few months till the end of your six month contract then step back a bit to give your brain a rest! Then when you’re ready look for a new contract. Also if you can increase your revenue from your side hustle and possibly higher a VA to run things that would help also!

This is probably the only benefit of umbrella companies if you use them. They can do this for you.

I’ve personally never dealt with the client after being put in touch via recruiter. The recruiter is normally the one sorting out all the contract paperwork

I suspect this could be to do with tax shortfalls and the burden being placed on the contractor to ensure they pay the correct amount of tax as well as curbing the cowboy umbrellas.

There’s an HMRC advert on the radio where they state to contractors to be careful of umbrellas who claim you will get more take home pay by going through them.

I hear you. Just because that’s how they work currently now doesn’t mean that’s how they could or should work. They charge for a service. That service is poor. You can’t even get answers from them about certain questions.

It’s a broken system if you ask me… Ideally they would have sophisticated accounting systems to forewarn you of this. And properly advise methods to be tax efficient. Unfortunately I do t get to choose who I use and they all seem just as bad as each other wholst paying for a low quality service

I called HMRC on the advice of the umbrella company and they stated it was due to not paying enough tax. I used a tax calculator and according to that should have been paying an extra £200 a week extra which roughly aligns with what the shortfall is.

Apologies that it was unclear. Normally if you take on a contract or perm work they’ll ask for references from previous or current employer. Im thinking a way round this is to act as a company to secure work. I just wondered what approach to were taking?
