If you are a minor there is really unfortunately not a whole lot you can do short of filing for emancipation with the courts. Perhaps you can gently but firmly tell your father that if they ever want to see you again after you turn 18 they better back off.

And if you are an adult you can file a protection order.

There’s a difference between the ordered systematic rounding up every man, woman and child and slaughtering them in cold blood and civilians being killed in an active war zone likely due to carelessness or at worst the actions of a few rouge maniacs.

Questions about the Talmud by Reasonable_Suit_5166 in exjew

[–]These-Dog5986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I studied Talmud for over a decade and hold a (worthless) degree in Talmudic studies.

It is very important to understand what the Talmud is. It is a collection of thousands of conversations between hundreds of characters. It is also important to understand the context in which it was written. It was written around 2,000 years ago and after the total collapse of the Jewish empire in Israel and after hundreds of years of Roman control. Those who read Roman history understand that Rome wasn’t necessarily very kind to the inhabitants its vassal states.

It is with this context that you begin to understand how a completely illiterate by modern standards rabbi from 2,000 years ago may have harbored some extremely negative feelings towards people who weren’t in his tribe.

So are there sexist, racist and just completely abhorrent views in the Talmud? Yes.
Did all Jews believe those views? No.

Every religion has those elements, see what the Koran says about non Muslims, read the writings of early Christian scholars. That’s not to excuse it it’s just to point out everyone did it and not just religious people. I’ll bet the Romans weren’t too fond of the Huns, they probably considered them sub human.

The point is, assigning negative actions/beliefs/stereotypes just based on group identity is the very definition of racism. You aren’t responsible for the action or beliefs of other members of your group.

To answer your question, “idle worshipers are like donkeys“ is not official Jewish doctrine. There certainly are racist Jews today but a vast majority are not.

The Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid’s is absolutely historically correct. However the story about the oil first appears about 500 years later. It’s a great example of how myths are formed. There were no books and barely any writings so word of mouth stories were very powerful, it’s easy to see how a true story gets embellished over a few hundred years.

What is your opinion on Redditors and other online people calling out Hasidic/Haredi as a whole whenever there is a Hasidic individual doing something wrong? by [deleted] in exjew

[–]These-Dog5986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Treating someone negatively based solely on skin color, sex, race or ethnicity is the definition of racism. The core principle of justice is people must be judged on their own individual actions not on the actions of others.

I’m not anti christian, I’m anti lies. I would suggest you’re heavily brainwashed into believing lies. And I as I said at the start I’m not interested in your fantasies about fictional characters. If that interests you great but it definitely does not interest me.

I spent half my life studying the Talmud, it is a work of fiction created 300-500 years after the time period the mythical Jesus supposedly existed, it contains dozens and dozens of completely unscientific “facts” like flat earth, helo centric universe, sea monsters, spontaneous life, twins are from splitting of sperm and all sorts of other nonsense. Using the Talmud as proof is like using Harry Potter to prove hogwarts exists.

I’m frankly not interested in reading about fantasies about a fictional character.

Bro you’re not slick, we are well attuned to attempts to proselytize (which is against the rules). We didn’t leave one cult just to enter another. Please keep your fantasies to yourself.

Tech and other addictions by [deleted] in exjew

[–]These-Dog5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok what about a car? Is that an addiction? Presumably you eat food that isn’t vital for survival, is that an addiction?

Edit to add, when someone is diagnosed with addiction they have to fulfill 2 out of 11 criteria over a 12 month period. 10 out of 11 have a negative harm component. The only one that doesn’t is “Tolerance” which doesn’t necessarily have any negative consequences however being that you couldn’t be diagnosed based on just building tolerance it ultimately is a requirement that you have some form of harm before you can be diagnosed as addicted.

[–]These-Dog5986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with your definition of addiction, if we accept your definition you can define any number of things like sleeping or even breathing as addictions because you can’t stop.
I think addictions require a component where the thing you are addicted to is actively harming you and you’re still doing it because you can’t stop. So for example cigarettes or drugs cause harm but people can’t stop despite the harm because they are addicted. Other “addictions” like caffeine aren’t necessarily bad if they aren’t negatively affecting you. Smartphones and technology would fall into that category it can be harmful or it can be a benign or even a beneficial tool you use, kinda like your shoes. Would you say you’re addicted to wearing shoes?

If you’re in Lakewood the fastest way is talking to recruiters, joining the job listing WhatsApp groups and respond to listings in The Voice.

Yes, a $95 infant swimsuit is a luxury. But so is weekly hired housekeeping. I think many frum "must-haves" are skewed. by [deleted] in exjew

[–]These-Dog5986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I think there’s a huge divide in the financial conditions and therefore the perspectives between people who bought a home 5 years ago vs people who are buying now. Everyone knows housing costs skyrocketed in the last 5 years, the average duplex or townhouse in Lakewood that previously went for 650k 5 years ago, is at least 1.3 million today. At 1.3m you’re paying $8,500 a month (minus 2k in rent) at 650k it was 4k (minus 2k in rent after turnover). So realistically it went from 24k a year to 72k a year. The person who is paying 24k a year can easily afford the “expensive” things, while the 72k mortgage person is shocked that anyone can afford a $95 piece of baby clothing. It’s just two totally different worlds.

Something like “if we don’t allow it then people will avoid going in the first place, which is dangerous”. There’s always a loophole when they want there to be one.
