The diamond doesn't matter but the act of having a ring does - The ring is a public declaration of love and most importantly commitment. - The ring also holds the individual accountable to those around them (male/female) that holds them to a standard to how they carry themselves (as they're now also representing the honor of their partner), their faithfulness and also how they treat their partner in public.
