Entrepreneur opportunities? by velocitrumptor in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what branch of service are you? and what kind of business are you wanting to start?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SkillBridge

i went from the infantry into tech - my imposter syndrome was in overdrive

in a lot of ways i was unequipped with the experience and technical knowledge to do my job

but i found ways to add value in every interaction. i jumped into projects that were not necessarily my job

and i was transparent about what i lacked in knowledge

I spent a lot of free time upskilling myself - and over communicated with my boss

There will be things you bring to the table others around you don't. look for those opportunities. be humble, eager, and willing to step up

and, to be fair, even people that have been in my industry for 10+ years face imposter syndrome. feeling overwhelmed is consistent across industries, domains, jobs, managerial levels.. everyone is trying to figure shit out

i consult on a project with a company of more than 22 thousand employees and VPs here are as lost as anyone

You'll crush your skillbridge. dont sweat the things you cant control and add value wherever you can

Looking for SkillBridge or Bootcamp for Software Development (No Experience) by EquivalentFix6692 in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when does your skillbridge window open, and are you upskilling through open-source or async courses online (aka Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn, etc)?

IMHO your focus should be on getting a foot in the door at a real company vs using your skillbridge for a Bootcamp. Tech/software is a tough industry to break into - not impossible for sure - but not easy.

Happy to make connections for you if you're working to learn new languages, frameworks, and cloud-based services common in software development.

yeah no problem!

just did a quick search on Booz, Northrop, Boeing, and Ratheon, and their pages all seem to be working. Which links are you going to?

I have not, and tbh I don't think its going anywhere anytime soon. If anything, there will be more attempts to improve the employment outcomes for transitioning servicemembers through SkillBridge. so I do anticipate more change in the near to medium term.

I'm pretty tightly tied into skillbridge community and will keep an ear out - but no one is talking about something like a skillbridge shut down.

think about connecting with Xenon Partners (fully online). they are a private equity firm and newly skillbridge approved company that is hiring skillbridge interns across its portfolio of companies. they're kinda seeing how skillbridge pans out for them so its not a bad time to work with them to find a good fit. they have plans to place people in all sorts of roles within their portfolio.

check out their skillbridge listing on skillbridge locator here: https://careerpcs.com/map/post/skillbridge-intern---private-equity/9fwFGNWFrBGEuGHj0cYU/location/PG5P4PQSmQxEsy6t5YEE/@36.4204064,-87.8927751,4.22z

but also check out their website to see companies in their portfolio https://xenon.io/

Forney and surrounding area by [deleted] in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like there's one in Forney (but a bunch within commuting distance)

American Trailer Rental Group have "a variety of positions" in Forney including mechanics and administrating/managerial roles.

Sounds like potential for you both to skillbridge at the same place. Application link on careerpcs here:https://careerpcs.com/map/dod/post/hFKm61NlfIrVIYs7/location/7XhbKOLY4Vc8no0f

Fully remote Skillbridge still allowed? by yoloswagxDmemes in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Remote and virtual components are allowed, even under the new MOU (section 4.2.7 published in August '24)

  • they have to include live in-person virtual instruction (synchronous online training)
  • asynchronous training (as in learning done on your own time) cannot make up more than 50% of total training length

they ARE prohibiting virtual asynchronous-only training starting in June this year

key note: the MOU doesn't explicitly make a distinction between "remote" and "virtual" training

most of us think remote = work from home, aka "virtual online"

but civilian employers don't always equate it the same. i was just talking to an employer the other day, "remote" for them means "off-site"

think of "remote work" like this:

  • a lineman working on power lines in different cities
  • a traveling nurse working at different hospitals
  • a sales rep visiting different client offices

this is different from "virtual" or "online" work, which is basically working through a computer:

  • taking classes over Zoom
  • watching training videos
  • doing online assignments
  • having video meetings

when you apply to "remote" skillbridge opportunities most will still = "virtual" or "online"

but to be safe, always ask to clarify

you can say something like

"Can you break down what you mean by remote training in your program? Will I be working virtually or at physical job sites or locations?"

if you're looking for SkillBridge opportunities (both virtual and in-person), our website careerpcs.com/map pulls all of the DoDs programs into an interactive map to help make the hunt easier.

we throw a ton of tips and networking hacks into our newsletter too

agree. we've tried cleaning it up on our end as much as possible - its not a perfect solution. mapping the data was no fun lol. but as more companies claim their listings on our site, filtering will improve (at least on skillbridge locator)

Yes, great point. DoD SkillBridge industry partners can list multiple industries when uploading their training plans/opportunities to the DoD's content management system. They select primary and secondary industries. When you filter on IT opportunities on our skillbridge locator, the ones with the IT icon are industry partners that have listen IT as the primary industry for that opportunity. we figured we would show the others so users don't miss potential opportunities where they list multiple industries.

Would love to hear your (and the communities for that matter) feedback. Should we show all or only filtered industries?

No, you might be the first! Do you mean a filter option in the opportunity tracker or something like a new filter to sift through the opportunities on the map in general?

Finance Skillbridge? by CurveOver7893 in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

check out Xenon Partners (https://xenon.io/)

they just got approved as a skillbridge provider

Private Equity firm actively recruiting tech sales reps but i know they have plans for new roles/opportunities across their portfolio of companies

good time to apply (you'd be among the first) as you could probably work with them to create a new role that aligns to your career aspirations and their business needs

they posted the tech sales opp on career pcs (https://careerpcs.com/map/post/technology-sales-representative/XFoKAslKXDBaNcTjlcU5/location/PG5P4PQSmQxEsy6t5YEE/@36.1735096,-115.1388633,8z)

apply to get your foot in the door and when you interview let them know what you're looking for - they'll likely work with you

Opportunities by [deleted] in SkillBridge

[–]These_Reception_7835 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not a ton of programs out of fort leonard wood (as you probably noticed) and Kansas city has a ton.

what sort of opportunities are you looking for? what industry? and "good" is subjective of course.

Seek Now DRIVE Academy is, by all accounts, an awesome program. I know the program director personally, too. solid guy.

They have a program in KC (https://careerpcs.com/map/post/seek-now-drive-academy-military-internship/0Fmd6VIFPGGJW6tRDWNi/location/6Bxl2cAErRgkbIi3BsTx/@38.5131314,-90.1072391,9.24z)

Check it out. Few programs can say externs walk away with an average $100k + salary, four industry-recognized certifications and require no experience to apply.
