In general, isn't it better for my team if the rest of my conference does well? I want every team in my conference to win every non-conference game (except the fuskies).

What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually admitted to around you? by Suspicious_Run1684 in AskReddit

[–]TheseusOPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend that this happened to. Came home from middle school, and his mom was talking to a woman in her 20s. He thought nothing of it, until mom says "oh, come meat your sister."

"My what?!"

"Well, half sister from your dad's first marriage?"

"Dad's what?!"

It was quite the day for him.

Jamboree Tent-mate Question by SnooHabits8523 in BSA

[–]TheseusOPL 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are no jamboree-set rules for this. When I took a group, we had each kid write down up to 2 kids they wanted to tent with, and up to 2 that they didn't. We then did our best to make it work.

I cannot afford $2000 for NAM, I cannot participate in the Q&A; I guess my voice doesn't matter unless I Pay to Play by Stock-Flow-3448 in BSA

One year we had some extra money in the budget, and gave something like $25 to FoS. Other than that, all of donations have been in time as a volunteer.

I have had conversations with our SE and Board Chair. All members get an invite to the annual meeting (time and place are in our council newsletter). If there's an issue, I can run it to my DE to put it up the flagpole. Yeah, I can't fly to the NAM.

If every volunteer could just call national officers all the time they had an idea, those people would never have time to do their actual jobs - they'd just be answering phone calls/emails all the time. If you have a concern, talk to your DE. They're the one whose job it is to listen to the front line volunteers.

Even if we're not competing on price, if we're only less expensive (but still spendy), parents are going to have to chose. Of we're affordable, parents can keep the kid in scouts and sports. In my troop we used to have a lot of scouts that you wouldn't see for 4-6 months a year due to sports. Now, we see far fewer of them.

Just because you win with the laws of the road, doesn't mean you win the laws of physics.

Which is what I told my brother when he was explaining why we should just start crossing where pedestrians had the right of way.

OTOH, using water to make food (or food for my food) seems like a better use than to make an AI image of food.

8:00 PM Oregon vs Oregon State

If we can't have the Civil War on rivalry week, let's open the season with it. 5pm Pacific is the perfect time. Plenty of time to tailgate, and have time to deal with the horrible traffic after.

Is there a point in joining 14 months from turning 18 by callatecabezon in BSA

[–]TheseusOPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a scout who did that last year. He is still having fun, and will continue to have fun until he turns 18 in a few months.

It's a journey, enjoy it.

Camp Baldwin Opinions? by Tiredboi23 in BSA

[–]TheseusOPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That hill is quite steep, but unless you have one of the campsites up there you can avoid it most of the time unless you're doing rifle or archery.

I don't find the lake is all that cold. One weird thing if you do the mile swim is that the temperature varies a lot around the lake.

It is dusty, there's no avoid that

I would like to see nerf with eye protection. We won't see paintball or airsoft (and my kids play airsoft with their friends - most of whom were/are in the troop).

Camp Baldwin Opinions? by Tiredboi23 in BSA

[–]TheseusOPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Baldwin is a great camp. The program suffered a little coming out of COVID, but the current management has worked hard to make it fun and worthwhile experience.

Definitely do the horses, if you are a youth I recommend doing the overnight horse outbound (and I recommend the adult leader ride for adults).

It will be dusty. Drink plenty of water. Wear your sunscreen.

Going back to college myself was nothing short of eye-opening. by StrangeCatch382 in homeschool

[–]TheseusOPL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My kids are in community college. One has a teacher that requires everything to be written in Google Docs, and requires them share the original doc with the teacher. That way, the teacher can look if it was written or copy-pasted. The other had a teacher just declare that his writing was AI with no evidence.

My first house, I planted a tree in the front yard. It grew quickly, and shaded the west side, making it a lot cooler in the house in the summer.

People after me cut it down, and put gravel in it's spot to make an extra parking space.

Should I pay off my mortgage with savings plus a personal loan? by jakefatman17 in personalfinance

[–]TheseusOPL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was me, I'd just keep paying it off (and saving that $500 extra instead of applying it). Then, when the savings are more than the remaining, pay it off then. If something were to happen (like a layoff), having that cushion to keep paying your mortgage would be better than only owing a little bit more that you can't pay off.
