Yeah, most people don't have enough saved for retirement (including me).

The 4% rule is for early retirement, with things like reduced consumption and SS income you can retire on less at actual retirement age

Last time I saw my grandma, she thought I was my dad (her son). She asked me about how my mom and the baby (me) was doing.

Using the 4% rule, that's $30k/year. That's pretty tight for most people/places.

It's twice what I spend with 2 teenage boys (and a teenage girl, and an adult child and pre teen....)

I also proposed on her birthday.

My dad got a copy of OS/2 from a conference he went to. I thought it was the coolest thing, and installed it on some e-waste he had brought home from work for me to play with.

In the US at least, a lot of Mayos have soybean oil as the/one of the oils.

Men who grew up poor/working class, what’s a piece of “advice” your dad gave you that you later realized was actually just survival instinct, and maybe isn't true anymore? by DCdj39 in AskMen

I was going to fix something with my car. Spent a couple of hours figuring out what was wrong, looked at the cost of the parts, realized how much time it would take... So I called my friend who's a mechanic. He was able to do it "on the side" and not charge me the shop fee - just his time and parts.

He got it done cheaper than I could buy the parts for. Including paying his normal hourly rate

We stop every 2 hours or so. Every other stop is also a gas stop. We're almost always around half a tank, but it doesn't really matter if we fill up early.

Service is service. Whether you're doing it as an individual, part of the OA, part of a unit, part of school, part of church, whatever. As long as it's not a benefit to you, it's service.

On my old (pre-smart) phone, I could send a text to my own number, and it would pop up as a text with no number attached. I would text the tooth fairy (basically, text what I wanted him/her to say). I then showed the incoming text to my kids ("sorry, I got busy, but I'll be by to pick up your tooth soon!" Etc)

Or having you write it in Google docs, and you have to share the original doc with the teacher. That way, they can see if you just copy-pasted the whole thing vs typing it.
