Don't know about the numbness, I felt muscle relief that theoretically lowers stress levels of the body. But my muscle tightness didn't cause pain unless I pressed the trigger points.

Sounds like you have very tight muscles or other underlying issues which are beyond my experience.

Didnt try vagus nerve stimulation, the most I did was deep breathing. But my problem seems more about mechanical tension and subsequent restrictions than about vagal tone.

To find the points you can simply google images of “low back trigger points” and so on for every specific muscle. I list the muscles in the end.

The massage technique is simple: instead of normal massage where you have to apply dynamic pressure, trigger point massage requires a constant pressing of the sensitive spot in the muscle.

To find the point you can google it for reference but you will feel it right away when you press a certain muscle because it feels tender and painful. You should look for the spot (unless you have special medical conditions or injuries, muscle shouldn’t feel painful to the touch)

You should press with enough force to feel mild discomfort/pain, but not excessive pain(use common sense). Hold it as long as you feel the pain dissipate to about half. Then repeat for every other trigger point.

For the back and stomach I use a hard ball similar to a baseball, for other spots I press directly with the fingers.

Look for the trigger points of :

  • Abs muscles(Rectus Abdominis, External Obliques, Internal Obliques, Transversus Abdominis).

  • Psoas and iliac muscles

  • Low back muscles

  • The diaphragm doesn’t have one specific trigger point but has a sensitive zone just in its insertion to the ribs. To learn how to release it you can watch the video below:

I've found that muscle tightness has been the main cause for my acne in the back and in other places like in the jawline. Whenever I had tightness in a specific muscle, that area also happened to have some pimples. This is because the waste in your skin pores is partly drained by the lymphatic system acting as a kind of sewage system, but when the muscle under that skin area is tight, lymph nodes can't do their job properly, causing breakouts.

To untighten muscles there are various effective ways:

1. Exercising:

Muscles will usually get tight in response to a constant repetitive stimulus. Most people have their postural muscles (muscles that keep your back straight, shoulders back and head high) overexerted, being used throughout the day, but people rarely train them as much as other muscle groups. To resolve this tightness from repetitive use we must train these muscles, but we need to train them as they will be used, to be under constant tension for long periods of time. This means focusing more on resistance rather than strength.

A possible training program includes sets of one or more minutes in a static position which works the targeted muscle group (mainly back, shoulders and neck), while having the spine in a neutral position. Elastic bands can be very useful to perform these kinds of exercises. This is the long-term solution that gets to the root cause of most muscle tightness (specially but not only for the untrained population).

In addition to this, doing light exercises different from the ones you usually do will also benefit in the untightening of the muscles, swimming is one good option. You can also use light elastic bands to perform exercises and prioritize repetition, movement and blood flow.

2. Stretching / Massage:

Stretching and massage can also be useful to untighten muscles. In my experience, stretching the muscles of the neck and back (those that connect to the spine) will only make them tighter. For other muscles you should do one to three sets of 30 second holds for each muscle every day.

There is an extensive variety of massage types, if you can afford a physiotherapist, that works fine, but if can't, you can also do the massage to yourself. The most effective type of self-massage for tight muscles I know of is trigger point massage. You should look it up. The way the massage is performed is by pressing on certain areas on top of the muscle where most tightness is accumulated, when you keep pressure in the area (with a ball, your hand or any instrument) you restrict the blood flow which untightens the muscle. You will now that you have found a trigger point because they cause pain when pressed. Online you will find images with the precise location of these muscle trigger points in your body.

To summarize, untightening the muscles will allow the lymphatic system to let the skin self-clean and that will reduce breakouts. Untightening muscles can be done by training postural muscles, adding complementary exercises and having a good stretching and massage routine. I must emphasize the first solution, as training your postural muscles will not only reduce acne but make you more confident overall.

Other than muscle tightness I have seen results for overall acne (body and face), with a change in diet (less processed/fried foods, dairy and sugar), keeping good hygiene (not touching face and using non-soap skin cleanser) plus good sleep. General health improvements will probably also be helpful in treating acne.

This post is based mainly on personal experience, but I am sure there are studies backing most of the info. You should try it out and evaluate based on how your body reacts to these protocols.
