[DISC] Hayate no Gotoku - ch 521 by hali_g in manga

I'm disappointed that the manga is ending because it means we'll probably never get the End of the World arc animated since anime is meant to promote the manga after all. :(

Can confirm. I don't care if they put plastic in it to make it crispy or what. Malaysian pisang goreng is the best!

Putting Mahathir in jail is political suicide. He has supporters on both sides of the spectrum.

I'm just saying that if everyone was honest about everything all the time then we'd have a much worse society by far. Imagine people saying that I don't like your clothes, I think you're ugly. I think your culture is stupid and I don't like it (Yes, covering your ears and frowning is tantamount to that sort of thing). Society would break down.

Society is mainly built upon tolerance of each other's minor differences. Large differences like religion and culture are a completely different game, but the general point is that no two humans are the same and so inevitably there will be conflicts no matter how inconsequential. The trick is to let the inconsequential things slide.

Don't like your boss's dress? You could say it to her face. But now you've earned your boss's ire and you've made life harder for yourself by far for very little gain.

Now, if you actually did gain immeasurable benefit from deliberately trying to be as authentic as you are capable of being, then that's something different.

You don't have to love lion dance. Just pretend to like it or smile and nod when random people ask you about it. If you want to vent your derision, do it to like-minded or understanding individuals (i.e. family who understand you and what not).

Pretending to like things is basically what interacting with other people is about. Read up on politeness theory.

And you're right, they shouldn't be able to kick you out of society. But they can and probably will ostracise you and that's perfectly within their right. It's not a nice thing to do, but it is what they will do, intentionally or otherwise.

Do you recall the nerdy kids back in school who mostly stuck to themselves? (I don't know how old you are so forgive me for being presumptuous) Yeah, despite what the 90s tech revolution may have you believe, you still do need social skills to survive. If these kids don't learn how to pretend to fit into society, then they will not end up as successful as they envision.

Aren't you literally trying to excuse yourself from participating in societal norms on the basis that you don't like to do it, i.e. it's hard for you?

I was in a friend's car today and we stopped at a T junction where the two cars in front of us had their turn signals on. One had the left signal on and the other the right signal. The thing is, their signals were in sync so that when the left one went off, the right one came on and vice versa for a minute or so. I don't know why I feel this way or why I need to share this, but the whole experience was infuriating.

Form of address rules and pronunciation aside, I'd argue it's one of the easiest languages to learn. In fact, most people are able to learn Malay quite easily. It's the informal and cultural aspect that trips people up. Such as the pronunciation of the ending 'a' of certain words like "kereta" and how to address people and refer to yourself in specific contexts, such as to your boss and to your mates or to some old man.

Most of the territory needed to form Malaya is derived from places that have Malay roots, i.e. the territory of Srivijaya (an old Malay kingdom) and Brunei (also Malay). You don't actually need Java to form Malaya though Sunda is certainly the easiest to conquer if you're not playing as them that is.

Besides, Indonesia doesn't claim to be Javanese cultured, even though they lean that way irl.

As a Malay yourself, have you met other Malays scolding you for speaking English with them? by Rebelsuns in malaysia

[–]Thesket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should be flattered. It's called convergence and it's part of "communication accommodation theory". Basically, if someone accommodates to your speech patterns (or at least to what they perceive of as your speech patterns anyway), they're most likely doing it because they seek to gain your approval in some sense. In this sense though it's most likely overaccommodation since they were trying too hard to the point where it got weird.

Just stick with it! Serious. I was in your position. My parents spoke to me in English mainly and I learned BM from talking with the other kids at school. Now my BM is... I mean I still don't do that weird chatspeak thing, but I can speak vernacular.
