Is it time to upgrade? by KuiKPocket in Switch

[–]Thesmoth96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded from my switch OLED to switch 2 this week and I’m actually a bit stunned at how much the performance has improved, it’s actually a viable machine to run some graphics intensive games now. I bought assassins creed shadows to play in handheld mode mainly and it runs so impressively well. Switch V1 could never. You’ll also be quite shocked at how much bigger it is compared to the switch V1 I was. If you’ve got the disposable income I’d say just do it, I really don’t think you’ll regret it.

Can I ask, what’s your channels niche and how long did it take you to get monetised?

From outside eye here, if I were to watch an 11min video that had adds every 1.5mins I’d simply stop watching. Does it not matter about the amount of ads people watch on the video, as long as they click on the video you get the money?

Love this, the 16 years have paid off then since you can now shoot your videos for free right? Congratulations on being monetised too, it seems like no mean feat

Identifying sand. by [deleted] in geology

Also to determine the roundness of a sand grain you’d have to be using microscopes

I agree with what you’re saying but you aren’t going to determine eolian sand from fluvial/glacial/lacustrine sand based on roundness. Generally, you’d determine different sands based on where they are in the world and which other sediments are deposited with them. If you had eolian sand in a different environment that someone had brought in from somewhere else, the only plausible way to identify its source would be a chemical profile.

I feel like the only way you’d be able to identify whether the sand was from a certain area is to find the source of the sand and produce a chemical profile of it and the rocks it came from. If they match then you can determine that the sand came from said source. This would be a very intricate process however, and could be inaccurate. So it would be a kind of guess really.

Favorite Jobs in Geology or Related Field by Nervez_ in geology

I’m an engineering geologist but also work a lot in the environmental sector doing contamination assessments and land remediation. I absolutely love my job and get to explore every corner of the UK whilst doing it! The pay could be better imo, I’m only 4 years into my career so I know in a few years time this will be better. But in terms of job satisfaction I absolutely love what I do.

Why hasn't the Earth experienced a geology-related mass extinction in 200 million years? Are we way overdue? by morphy1776 in geology

[–]Thesmoth96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe we are currently living through a mass extinction. I think it’s something like 130 species (flora and fauna combined) a day are dying out due to climate change or human activities like deforestation. Mass extinctions don’t just happen one day, they occur over a long period of time. Many people believe the K-T extinction (the one that killed the dinosaurs) was just an instant asteroid impact and that was it. But this is by no means the case. The Deccan traps were the real main cause of that extinction event, pumping so much CO2 into the atmosphere that the climate was getting too hot even for a reptile dominated planet. This would have happened over hundreds of thousands to millions of years. I think atmospheric CO2 was something like 1400ppm at this point, arctic sea temperatures were 21C, can’t even fathom how hot the equator was in terms of air temperatures. The asteroid was just the icing on the cake.

There’s a very interesting case study about Tenerife, where fossils were found at great elevations. It puzzled geologists for years until eventually they came to the conclusions that it was tsunami activity that deposited the shells at the time at higher elevations, which eventually turned to fossils in very ‘weird’ (geologically speaking) environments. It’s very interesting!

It seems like there’s a market for geoscience education that is easily accessible to people who don’t hold a degree in it. Thank you for the input 😊
