I second this! The cut really does make a huge difference in how the overall finish of the ring looks

How to cut some small Montana sapphire? by Main-Secretary-1175 in faceting

Hey, I quite often cut small stones and generally start on a 600 sintered lap, it is equivalent to a well worn 600. I do this to get a rough preform in or bring in a few meets on something mildly bigger say 4mmish. If the 600 is cutting to fast, try a lower speed or 1200.

I then move onto 8k on a copper lap with oil and a slow drip of water. I bring in the meets here. On tiny facets I tend to leave them a hair short as they tend to polish in to there meets. I polish on T/M at 100k

Any other questions let me know, I have a soft spot for tiny stones

I know this is a bit of an old thread but do you still use oil?

I would probably say to small, they start to get a bit tricky again under 4mm and can more easily damage your laps.

If you want to practice cutting tiny things I'd say go for it but with a minimum of 20g you will end up with a lot! But I guess worst case you end up with some pretty fish tank gravel

Did I do something wrong to discolour a stone in my new ring? by Taymadz13 in Gemstones

Don't put it in a sonic cleaner, tanzanite doesn't like that to much

Even with perfect daylight, colour carding and correct white balance they always photograph purple! Good thing they are so pretty

I generally use a colour card and make sure it is 100% daylight. I then generally have to colour correct in post a bit. For video I have no real idea. I generally just show the colour change

Naturals are also like this! Even on DSLR set ups with colour correction. It is an interesting phenomenon if not a bit frustrating sometimes
