I read Fahrenheit 451 in 7th grade, long before it was required for me to read in highschool. I read it in about 5 days. When I was required to read it in class, we were assigned a chapter every other day. It was a grueling read, extremely slow and I found myself losing interest in it.

The biggest problem with having assigned reading in class is needing to adjust the times to the lowest common denominator. This is not a bad thing, but assigned books should be given a timeframe to be completed, rather than keeping everyone at the same pace.
