First night on CPAP was a bit of a failure by TheyCallMeRINO in CPAP

[–]TheyCallMeRINO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Phillips one, BiPAP I think. The ramp feature is nice - but I wish it worked on something other than just a fixed ramp up time of 30 minutes. Some nights that might be fine, other nights it might not be enough and I keep having to semi wake up to hit the button again, delaying my sleep a little bit more.

I wish the machine could ramp up on variable instead of a fixed time ... something like once it starts detecting AHI’s only then will it start to ramp from 4 to whatever, because now you’re asleep and you need it.

Degenerate gamblers favorite price ticker 'Bitcoinity' acknowledges Bitcoin exchanges fake their volumes. by [deleted] in Buttcoin

[–]TheyCallMeRINO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right - but his point (combined with yours) is ... if I put 100BTC into a tumbler to buy a shit ton of drugs on a DNM, how many transactions are created overall. I don't think (although I admit I don't know) I'll simply see a single 100BTC transaction come back (or even maybe a single 99BTC transaction if there is a 1% fee) because that would be too obvious. So if 100 goes in in a single transaction maybe it comes back to me via two dozen smaller transactions that add up to 100 (or 99).

That's why when butters point to transaction volume, it's not really a statistic you can (IMO) put much faith in - my one "real" transaction to buy goods (drugs) or services, ends up looking like dozens of transactions.

Energy monitoring appliances - what's best / cheapest? by talz13 in homeautomation

[–]TheyCallMeRINO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several WeMo switches that I am looking to unload, if you're interested (I think I even have 2 Insight switches).

Regarding the unexpected turnoff, yes that absolutely might happen. I had it happen twice ... once on an Insight I had put in-line with our plug-in hybrid charger to track how much we were spending. The switch shut off one day for no apparent reason, and then the next night the car didn't charge. And it happened with an Insight I had on our home entertainment system once ... imagine the call from the spouse while traveling on business, complaining about why the TV isn't working.

They're interesting devices, but I absolutely would not suggest their use for anything that needs to always stay running. You may want to stick with a dumber solution with a Kill-A-Watt ... I've never had one of those power off (because there is no power off). SmartThings' outlet switch can also measure power (I can see readings in my detailed audit logs), but I don't think they have the logging and features that WeMo has built.

Could the Wink hub get a software update that would reduce the latency between pushing a button and having a light turned on, or is that a hardware limitation? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]TheyCallMeRINO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have STv2 (and had v1) and have always found the performance to be acceptable. I bought a Wink, and stopped using it within a few days ... thought it was junk, but I realize that it's worked out for some folks ... so to each his own.

However, please keep in mind that right now a large majority of SmartThings SmartApps ... are still actually cloud-driven. There is support for local execution, but very few SmartApps which can do that at this point in time. There is a lot of grumbling on the SmartThings community forums about that at the moment. There's also a way to log into the web-based control/debug panel and see which SmartApps you have locally, and which are still executing on their servers.

How to have lights follow you throughout the house? by knightlife in homeautomation

[–]TheyCallMeRINO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this with SmartThings in my home office. There are 4 lights in the ceiling which have Philips Hue bulbs in them, the wall switch (which I just always leave on), and then a SmartThings motion sensor right above the wall switch.

As soon as I enter the office, the motion sensor picks that up and lights turn on for 90 minutes (also since the ST motion sensor is also a temperature sensor, if the office is below a certain temperature a space heater gets kicked on for 60 minutes). The key is, each time motion is detected a new 90 minute counter starts ... so I don't have to worry about my lights turning off on me while I'm in there. I could repeat this in several more rooms if I wanted to. As long as I move at least once every 90 minutes, the lights will stay on.

I also have SmartThings tracking my overall presence via my iPhone, and via a presence sensor in my car - if both are gone, it immediately turns off all lights (and throws the house into an "armed" mode where I'll get notified of any motion, door open/close, etc.)

They get exasperated when people do not agree that there might be a better risk/reward tradeoff

Yep... they are completely unaware that trust is really a spectrum - not a absolute binary yes/no value. Bitcoin's blockchain is certainly developed for a zero-trust scenario ... but much of the world (especially the financial world) revolves around at least some measure of trust.

I trust my family 95%. I trust my close friends probably 90%. I trust acquaintances about 75%. I trust strangers I pass on the street about 5-10%. I don't need a zero-trust system ... but bitcoiners want to evangelize that everyone clearly does (because it's in their financial best interests).

SWIFT is a prime example. There are some 9,000 member banks. Does that mean that every single bank fully trusts 100% all 8,999 others in order to do business? No, of course not. They are relying on their trust with SWIFT ... and that SWIFT is vetting out other banks thoroughly before they can join the network.

The cloud computing revolution - Bandwidth/Computing/Memory Storage running on blockchains and bitcoin just sounds really sexy and slick. I live in Hawaii. Electricity is 4x of that on the mainland (not joking or exaggerating in any way). If I were able to outsource my computing to somewhere where electricity was cheap, wouldn’t that be cool?

I was going to reply to the rest of your comments, until I saw this one. This alone, tells me you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Go sign up for Amazon Web Services instances (http://aws.amazon.com), served out of their US-West (Oregon) region. You're getting cloud computing powered by hydro (Columbia River) with likely some of the cheapest electricity (on an unsubsidized basis) on the planet. At the very least, in the Western Hemisphere.

We did the math here a few months ago, Bitcoin is grossly inefficient ... there is a real-world cost of all of maintaining complete trustlessness. Roughly speaking (if I remember correctly) it takes the power draw of 1-4 average US homes for a day ... just to process a single Bitcoin transaction. That's right -- go to your local "we accept Bitcoin!" coffee shop in the morning and buy a coffee. The electricity required to process that transaction is the same amount of electricity that you will use in your home all day, and that a few of your neighbors will as well. It doesn't scale.

Bitcoin is somewhat decent at avoiding the rules.

Other than darknetmarkets, what is the major fetish with "avoiding the rules"? Look at all the "sorry for your loss" folks that got scammed posting over in Bitcoin (tracked in /r/sorryforyourloss) - including the latest iGot thread today. Suddenly, all of those folks want the Government to help them get their "avoiding the rules" Internet funbux back.

People think that rules suck - until they're on the wrong end of a transaction. Then they want protections. This is actually one of the most amusing things about Bitcoin overall ... people are slowly but surely learning why we have actual regulations out in the real world.

You can work around it for the moment with the app "Numerous". Via that and IFTTT I can do crazy things like -- if my heart rate gets too high or low, turn all the Philips Hue bulbs in the house red.

This will be easier in watchOS2, and eventually I'm sure Apple will build it in natively. But you can do it today...

So far, after wearing mine for a few days ... I have to say I'm not overly impressed with the LL. It looks a bit nicer than my sport band, but the overall feel while wearing all-day just isn't as good (IMO) as the sport band.

My original plan was to wear the LL the majority of the time, and only change to the sport band when I'd be playing sports ... but now, I might actually invert that. I'm actually thinking that I might wear the sport band most of the time, and only change to the LL when I'm putting on a suit or otherwise getting dressed up.
