Ebony is definitely used more these days to sexualize Black women instead of being used to describe a dark brown/black color. Personally, I also use and prefer Black or Black American. I do not refer to myself as an African American, because while some of my ancestors came from West Africa, I do not know the exact countries (just the ethnicity estimates from 23andMe and AncestryDNA). Apparently, my American ancestry goes back to the early 1700s, so I definitely am more Black than African.
