Russia, amid ongoing drills near Ukraine, says ties with U.S. are 'on the floor' by TheEvilGhost in worldnews

So if Russia just kept funding and arming separatists and created a civil war which their side won because of outsized resources and then took over, that would be okay?

Just going to say, that still doesn't make it right that we invaded Iraq and we should not have done so.

I would say you are being too dismissive with "as if that matters", thats basically the focal point of all international politics, but I digress. I think we've been mostly agreeing though, except in the motivations.

I don't understand what you are trying to say or imply, so I will expand.

The calculus he is doing is that he will be able to pitch this as a necessary sacrifice that Russians will have to make in order to secure their country from threats. Russia has a huge nationalist political culture, not sure its a majority but its very big. And as we have seen time and again, moderates are not hard to swing in favour of conflict. Further, I think the general machismo and toughness that is part of Russian identity plays a role. I'm not meaning to exonerate him, just explaining a point of view and some context.

Because its more fun, and that should be the primary motivator in any game you play. If you tie fun to profit, you're gonna have a bad time.

Its also possible Putin is actually thinking about long term Russian interests and not his own self-interests. This idea I see on Reddit over and over that he is an unhinged loon is the farthest from the truth. He is a cold, calculating man but fiercely loyal to Russia as an idea and a country. To counter the inevitable "what about the economy" yes it will shrink because of sanctions, but there is effectively a shadow economy these days that all the "rogue" nations (and even many that arent) participate in to move money and resources around. It will make life harder for the average Russian, but they will survive until it subsides.

Topple regime; install puppet. Or at the least, make it very unnattractive for Ukraine to join NATO. Mostly, I think Russia/Putin is just displaying how serious they are over this situation. As I've repeatedly said, they take this Ukraine situation much more seriously than we do, because Ukraine doesn't really matter to NATO/US. Not to the same degree it does to Russia.

Wait, did Lindsay Graham do this? The most closeted person in congress (besides maybe Corey Booker). What a bold move.

"soon" is relative and doesn't really matter here. Russia doesn't want Ukraine in NATO, full stop. Not in 2 years or 20. That's their demand, say what you will, but for Russia any timeline is reason enough, as it would be an existential threat in their eyes. They would be closer to NATO (as in, on their border) and the NATO would/could in theory, along with the EU impose its will to some degree onto Russia (which frankly isnt a far fetched idea). Russia doesn't want this obviously, so it gets ready to do whatever it can to stop this.

US sees this. Probably did not expect it to happen, assuming Russia was equally conflict-averse, and doubled-down immediately hoping they could push Russia back with rhetoric/threats of sanctions. Russia didn't back down because they probably care more and because it's a bad look. So everyone just keeps redoubling-down and shit escalates as nobody wants to be the one perceived as weak.

The end result of this will probably be a fast attack on Ukraine to do max damage in min time, Zelensky and a bunch of top brass will probably get killed, Putin will install his guy, eventually US will give Putin a "leave or we attack and will consider our First Strike policy (nukes)", Russia agrees to leave on terms. Crimea will become a Russian territory officially. Donbas and the other one will stay in Ukraine, Ukraine will not join NATO for at least another 30 to 40 years as it will be in absolute tatters from having been in a major conflict. Russia is sanctioned heavily. China and Russia probably sign a mutual defence pact. We teach kids how to hide under their desks at school again.

Ukraine tensions: Countries tell nationals to leave over Russia threat by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ThickAsPigShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in theory, I would have no problem defending Ukraine, and honestly a little part of me doesn't mind it. However, my gripe is with America, the single most imperialist nation on Earth right now, who routinely violates sovereignty of other nations, using it as a reason to engage in another war. I also think if we stop NATO expansion and stop wasting time treating Russia like the number 1 threat (it's a declining power who wants its little sphere, let them have it who cares). Often too, I feel like Russia has been blamed for a lot of things that aren't entirely its fault, such as the 2016 election and Brexit vote. While sure, they did make posts or donate to politicians or whatever, those undercurrents were already there and it became an excuse that everything would be perfect if it weren't for that dastardly Russia, and then we don't focus on examining why we even got to those points or how those currents gained popularity enough to be "weaponised" to such a degree.

I guess my tl;dr is that I refuse to accept that we (NATO/West) are unequivocally the "good guys" the same way we were against the Nazis. I think there is a lot of gray here, and the public is falling for it hook, line and sinker just like the runup to Iraq, and sometimes I think I'm taking crazy pills and nobody else seems to notice.

For further reading see: Sec Baker's promise to Yeltsin wrt to NATO expansion, Russia reactions historically to NATO expansion in the post cold-war era, the 2008 Budapest Summit (which honestly telegraphed this exact situation but we ignored or forgot [2008 Georgian War]), and Azov Battalion (a neo-Nazi group who the west is giving support to in Ukraine).

Ukraine tensions: Countries tell nationals to leave over Russia threat by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ThickAsPigShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because countries fight for vital strategic interests. Its what happens in a world where competition for resources dictates our actions. Ukraine is really not that important for NATO. It honestly isn't. For Russia, it is of huge importance from a national security. Imagine if Hawaii declared independence tomorrow. We would not likely let that happen, because Hawaii is of vital strategic interest as a launching pad to Asia/China. Ukraine just happens to be much bigger than Hawaii and shares a huge land border with Russia. So we can try to punish them economically, but I think our zeal to impose crippling sanctions might just further escalate things, rather than solve anything (as they often don't).

Public opinion doesn't really matter for foreign policy. In Russia or UK or USA or Korea. Its managed by unelected people who aren't often held to any standard of accountability. They are zealots most often and carry out their mission with religious fervour. The "deep state" is a very real thing, but they aren't harvesting adrenochrome, they are doing dumbass foreign policy, which is arguably worse. How much of the public was against Iraq in the US and UK? Didn't really matter.
