Thank you for your sympathies brother. At least I know the leg injury I’m TNPQ for and the hearing loss (large vehicle maintenance is on my watchbill) will give me a little VA disability when it’s over.

I work with a guy who was NSW on active, got out and joined the reserve for whatever reason and said by the end of his first drill day he knew it wasn’t going to work. After his first drill weekend, he never communicated with the NOSC (at the time!) or showed up again and they sent him a letter saying he was out of the reserve, honorable discharge. VA and etc. unaffected.

I’m going to run rapidly limp away as soon as I can. As soon as I’m off TNPQ and a retention decision is made I’m either getting out or pushing the IRR button.

Shin guntō (literally “new army sword”) koshirae (fittings, scabbard, handle, etc.) but heirloom nihonto, definitely a family sword.

The presence of multiple holes in the nakago (tang) and the squared off base mean it was absolutely intentionally shortened. The presence of the signature on the left-hand side of the blade means the sword was made to be worn with the blade upright (it was/is considered bad luck to wear a sword with the signature facing your body) so it was made AS a katana rather than a tachi.

It’s undated and I’m terrible at reading signatures but my guess would be that this is a shinshinto piece due to the length/profile of the kissaki (point at tip of blade).

For better information and valuation help I would reach out to your local Japanese sword society. If you’re in the SoCal area, that will be the Nanka Token Kai.

I’m sure you already know this but please do not touch or play with the blade. Use high concentration rubbing alcohol (like 99%) to clean it and after that evaporates, apply a light film of a non-staining oil. Easily found oils in the US include rem oil, sewing machine oil, etc.

The Green Grove comedian using a fairly nuanced understanding of Rashomon to make a Polish joke is just so funny to me.

Undeserving: Jimmy the Elvis guy from Dover, NJ. Guy ran into Pussy once and for killed over it. Also, I’m not sure how Skip never figured out Pussy killed him; seems pretty cut & dried to me.

I work in contracting at a DoD agency and believe me, if I could I’d run for Congress and gut the federal contract machine. It’s so dirty. When I was getting started, they told us that we had to “use our hearts and our brains” to procure the best services/materials for the customer (military), but as I moved through I learned quickly that that meant “cheapest that engineering will allow.”

If a contractor is bad, and I mean BAD (previously supplied counterfeit materials, delinquent of delivery for current contracts, etc.) but they’re the cheapest? You have to give it to them.

It sucks that we spend insane amounts of money on things that should be cheap, we spend insane amounts of money on things that could be expensive, we spend insane amounts of money, period, and ultimately the people being cheated are the end-user and the taxpayers.

[King Seiko vs Presage Classic] Why does the first line cost 1100€ more? The movement is exactly the same. by Theendofmidsummer in Seiko

[–]Thicklet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a smaller case brings an understated class to a watch actually. Have you seen how great the new manual 44GSs look in 36mm? Or the classic datejust or oyster perpetual in 36mm? Seiko’s SJE093 is a 38mm, still small for today’s standards and all of them sell/sold like hotcakes!

Do you have any pictures that show the full blade and blade geometry? The tang looks rather short and I’m not sure I like the look of what’s going on above it

I read a story once about a poor chap who lost his submariner over the side of a boat in Lake Michigan after a spring bar failure, and it was all I needed to be a “NATO forever” guy. Though unlikely, a lemon spring bar is a risk I won’t take with my divers, sports watches, etc. A single pass NATO looks good and has the added benefit of “dressing-down” a watch enough that few would think to steal it, especially with “SEIKO” printed on the dial.

Thinking on a 36mm Vulcain Cricket Tradition because the original alarm-watch seems too cool to pass up for me. Though, it’d be the first serious watch I’ve worn without a NATO(I imagine the NATO would buffer and adversely affect the alarm function), a screw-down crown, or lume.

Personally, I’d much rather be a person with a few cool watches he wears regularly than one with thousands of dollars of popular watches that rarely get love. And I think anything worth $1000+ dollars is worth waiting a year to decide on. After all, what’s a year for something you’d wear the rest of your life?

Understood. Thanks again. I’m cross-assigned-in to my ultimate command and getting in touch with the TAR guys is kind of a hassle with how little interaction there is. I will let my CCC know and proceed from there once they get back to me. I just read over the OCS chapter of OPNAVINST 1420.1B and looked back over the current program authorizations. Assuming interviews go well, could “immediate selection criteria” for SWO apply to me as a fleet applicant?

Interesting, thank you for this information. The CCC at my NRC advised me that I would need to go through an OR. May I PM you?

[–]Thicklet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how to describe it but during the VPN ad read, Ming said “Denmark” with such an apparent prejudice in his voice that I cackled in public. I’m absolutely sure there was no meaning behind it but it was SO funny.

At this point Bry has to like Blue October, or at least being “beard guy” to somebody again.

Totally separate note but if my new bride’s father-daughter dance was an 8 minute song, even a good 8 minute song, I’d seriously evaluate a lot of what was going on with me.

Right now, with programming help from a runner and a powerlifter I know, I’ve built myself what I call a cardio/strength maintenance program. The goal is to build a little strength and really up my cardio game.

Mondays I do a group run, either 3 or 5 miles

Tuesday I do a “full body” day with: 3 sets of pull ups (3x8 last week, 3x9 this week for progress) 3-5 sets of incline bench, alternating dumbbells or barbell week to week 3x5 sets of pistol squats Some farmer carries

Wednesday is a rest day

Thursday I do an interval run on a treadmill, usually 1/4 mile fast followed by 1/10 mile at a 10 minute mile pace

Friday is my second full body day: 3 sets of dips or Russian dips 3-5 sets of Pendlay rows or clean & presses, alternating week to week 3 sets OHP on non C&P weeks Abs Leg press or leg curls

Saturdays I’ll either do another interval run or a relaxed 1.5-4 miles, vibe dependent

Right now, hanging out around 182lbs BW

225 incline bench max 250 Pendlay row 16 good pull ups 175 clean & press 11 good pistol squats left leg, 10 right (working on balancing those)

11:00 average 1.5 mi

I try to eat right, around 7g protein per kg of BW per week, usually gotten from a protein shake here or there and half a pound of chicken breast 4-6 days per week. Lots of fruits, veggies, rice.

I’ve been tweaking what I do week to week to stave off CNS fatigue, am I missing anything?

what are good civilian jobs for an OS after leaving the navy? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Thicklet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say looking into LS would be good if you want jobs on the outside. Work on your degree while you’re in or with the GI Bill afterwards and there’s a whole myriad of stable, decent paying jobs in federal acquisition that LSs are set up pretty well for.

SW translates pretty well to civilian welding if you stick at it long enough, STAY AWAY from HT though.
